Om 617 Rebuild
larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
gorgeous! Mae sure you get a wax coating on the aluminum to keep it from corroding

interesting...does it stand engine temp nicely?

I've never owned a clean enough engine to use them, but waxoyl is supposed to be one of the super-duperest coatings:
http://www.waxoyl-usa.com/
If the aluminum parts are already painted then you're set, but if they're bare aluminum it won't take long for them to get crusty.
(12-23-2013, 11:25 AM)OM616 May I ask where you got your pistons from and how much they where? I'm trying to source parts for a 616 turbo build and new 617a pistons and rods are hard to find.

Oh man, that's NICE! Did you use OEM parts or something else?
If it's not too nosy of me, about how much did it cost to rebuild the thing ?

(12-23-2013, 08:39 PM)MFSuper90 Very nice looking rebuild. I bet balancing the rods will make a noticeable difference.

(12-24-2013, 12:34 AM)zeeman The balancing was $150.00 well spent. I was supprised how far off the crank, pistons, rods and flywheel were off from the factory. Balancing should make a major difference in performance.

I've always rubbed bare aluminium with a rug drenched with weapon oil. Works well and doesn't give colorizsations like waxes usually do. The little dust it collects can be wiped off easily with another oily rug
Can you tell me how you balanced your engine? Mine is at the machine shop right now and he is an amazing race engine builder (mainly V8's) but he is having a hard time figuring out how to balance the inline 5 cylinder. I've checked to see if there is any difference between the 5 and other inline 5 cylinders and I can not find a direct reference for Mercedes. The only reference I can find for another inline 5 is for the Audi's and they also use a 50/100% rotating to rotational weight for using bob weights.
I'm swapping into an FJ43 Toyota Land Cruiser and have a neutral flywheel at the moment.
