high mileage old 123? consider replacing the front coil springs out of hand
high mileage old 123? consider replacing the front coil springs out of hand
This happened overnight on my DD the other day. Car was not in use, ambient temp went from about 25 degrees to about 50. Spring let go as the vehicle was parked. I heard the noise from inside the house in the back in bed, pretty far away.
Thankfully this happened while the car was sitting, but I can't imagine what it would be like to lose a front spring while driving. Worth replacing old springs if your car has original stuff on there. This car has 370k on it.
The spring seat got all bent up, and for the interim until new springs are here, I cut off the end square and reinstalled the spring so the car is drivable. But I do not trust it right now
larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
It's always the driver's front, that's the third failure like that I've seen. The mystery disappearing spring.

I'm gonna replace them all, the driver front was the first, but who knows which one is next?
The rear spring is not such a big deal on a 123, since the shock will keep it generally in place, but the front spring goes and that's it, it just flies out of the car.

My did the same but it didnt pop out. Old rusty springs vs low tempature... mother nature one, shitty spring zero
I bought h&r lowest springs and new rubbermounts and lower balljoint from mercedes.
Got to love h&rs springs. Even got lowering susp for sls system
Ok, my #2 dumb question, excluding the yards, where does one buy new springs ... without being robbed blind by the Steadlership ?

pretty funny how the salt kills cars up there, I've seen the 126, 140, 203 and the 210 all blow up like that, never a 123. I just sold a 450k mile 123 and had zero issues w/ rust... I noticed on several cars working up north that a little crack in the paint would lead to this... but it was usually the last few coils or last tail of the spring. The 210 upper spring cup would tear off of the inner unibody and there is a repair that involves riveting the shit out of a large new panel to repair
that makes me wonder what the rest of the undercarriage looks like, I'm glad I'm not sharing the road up north anymore

Autp parts warehouse .com sells them 60 bucks a pair for lejdhrofrews springs (or however the hell that's spelled)
They also sell the rears, pretty decent deal.

(01-15-2014, 10:13 PM)JB3 Ok, looks like its 60 bucks a PIECE instead. Their website is pretty misleading. So I have a single pretty spring in hand now, and have to order another at the end of the month it look like.

auto parts warehouse is killing me on this. I just got shipped a rear spring for a 124 instead of a 123. I now have in hand, a single new front spring, and a single new rear spring.
By the time im done getting 4 of the things in hand, I will have paid for 6 different shipping events and returns. Their courteous and idiotic call center people are infuriating.

Time to file a chargeback and send the old ones back via "receiver pays shipping" UPS.
On PP there was a thread with guys ordering custom springs from somewhere near the Carolinas, and they weren't too expensive either.
Or bite the bullet & go local. If NAPA/O'Rielley's is too expensive Advance Auto has a bunch of $40 off $100 online but pick up in stores coupons.

that deprives me of the opportunity of debating the issue with a woman named "sunshine" from their call center like ive been doing. Thats her name spelled out no joke. He supervisor "moonbeam" was not available for comment.

now have two front springs, its slowing happening, everything has already been ordered and paid for, just being debated and replaced. Their website it completely wrong though, otherwise the price isn't too bad per spring.
That's because "Moonbeam" is over here trying to govern California, only problem is his head is so far up his ass that the lump in his throat is his nose

(01-21-2014, 11:04 PM)sassparilla_kid Any way they might have some stiffer rear springs? My car looks like a damn lifted pre runner or something in the front, and like a cholo low rider in the rear

WHAT THE HELL WITH THAT SNOW ! OMG. Thank God for the Sunny South. LOL
That's just how my car looks. Took off those rubber bits by the bumpers and then 'tucked' the bumpers as they call it. Now slush flies into that back bumper and it will fill up with a big ole block of ice. Keep a flat bar handy to help open the door
The '91 W126 in my sig is driven by my brother. It had a broken passenger side front spring last summer. We were lucky because it didn't come out. It wedged itself between the broken bit of spring and the inner part of the lower control arm.
Both cars now have new springs, his W126 and my W124. Much nicer in this snow stuff we've been having this year.

Screw that snow and salt deal. I grew up in the NE and had my fair share of it ... If I had that mess, I would have to run my car thru the car wash everyday ...
Holy shit that's a huge difference in the rear!!! Where did you get those rear springs!?!?
