some more pictures from the meeting at Schloß Dyck

http://www.nast-sonderfahrzeuge.de/MB-Ex...p?id=37218

http://www.formfreu.de/2010/08/08/merced...loss-dyck/

Can somebody confirm or correct me that the turbocharger looks like a Garrett T04B?
What size would that turbo be compared to a Holset for example?

After full load, don't turn the engine off immediately.

Probably to cool the turbo of course...

Edit: left 2 buttons say pump L and pump R. Kraftstoff means fuel. So some kind of fuel supply. Zuending I don't know for sure but i thought it was ignition. Starter, well seems obvious. And licht mean lights.

I think the white card is the calculated speed. 3,4,5 Gg are probably the gears (in german = gang)? and the engine RPM on top. Reifen translates to tires and the size is 215/70VR15

HA = hinterachse meaning rear axle (differential). That would be the final drive ratio = 3.07

Ditto on what Tito said.

How in the world can they get 170mph out of that gearing?

http://wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_speed_rpm.htm says 146.6MPH assuming 5th OD is 0.83 (normal 5th right). According to the calculator their 5th gear is 0.71!!!!

Woooow, nice. I'm a little confused as to which engine this is though. Going by the lack of oil filter housing the block is a 617.910? Which would've been used for the 1976 trials presumably, but the info panel says 1980? The other pics of the C111-IID have the normal filter housings. I see the head has the SLS drive blocked off, did the W115s even have SLS?

Jeez this raises more questions than it answers Tongue

PS- didn't happen to see a part number on that vacuum pump block off plate? lol

They basically took the engine from a W115 240 3.0D

The oil filter connection is below the injection pump. On the old pictures the oil filter is not the stock one.
Keep in mind that there were at least 3 engine versions. The "C111 orange Diesel 1" , "C111 orange Diesel 2" and the later "silver Diesel streamliner".

The cast number on the engine block indicates, that those engine blocks were  an extra casting with some missing holes so they could drill the holes later were they need them. But still a standard OM617 block.

They then did add several holes for the oil filter, piston cooling and so on. The engine also did get stronger rods, different crankshaft, special turbo pistons, bigger piston pins,....  Those upgrades were always related to the naturally aspirated  engine from the W115.
So the later turbo engine which you could buy in every car is very similar to the engine that drove  the records. There are some small changes like the record car had sodium filled inlet and outlet valves. The later production engine only has the outlet valves filled with sodium.

Oh and forget about what the info panels say. They were written by marketing guys....

The SLS drive on the head is  probably just a "power take-off" in reserve.  Maybe they would have needed an additional water pump, oil pump or whatever. On such a car you want to keep all possibilities.

Sorry, no part number on the block off plate ;-)

I checked some pics and indeed the oil filter on the earlier cars was a remote one, but still the cartridge style.
I was not aware of 3 versions of the engine, thought there was the IID (orange) of 1976 (190hp) then the silver IIID of '78 (230hp)?
I notice too the head has the pencil glow plugs so maybe the head was changed, would explain the SLS drive blocked off. Very interested in the mods you mention, in the middle of chucking a holset on a 617.912 for 150hp or so you see Tongue

Well what a shame Tongue Those vacuum cover plates seem so common in Europe.
