Hi gurus, got a 86 300GD with a 617a engine, it came originally with a 5 speed manual Getrag 711.420 if I`m not wrong.

the gearbox is squealing like a pig on all gears except 4th. and it sounds like a bad release bearing when in neutral and clutch released.. the release bearing is fine, so i suspect the input bearing is shot..

I am hoping for some tips from which cars can i source a gearbox that will fit my 617? i got the RHS starter. It is quite little gearboxes to find that are from a gwagen here in Norway. so I hoped to get some ideas and alternatives from where to source boxes that i could fit my car. dont mind some modifications.. shame that the 617 got the RHS starter as I found 4 boxes that are new for a nice price, but they all were LHS starters from a G290 and sprinters i believe.

any help is deeply appriciated..

change the input bearing? piece a cake

edit: when i was searching for 5speeds for om617 i learnt that there are 2 types of 5 speeds.
the first one has 1:1 on 5th gear and sits on the busses (406 or what they are called) this is a useless swap into 123 because they have 1:1 on 4th. maybe this is what was fitted to gw?
second one is impossible to find and if you find it it worth gold.

was a guy here fitted a 5speed from newer mercedes (wrong side starter) to a om617. check out his thread, that would be an option for you

I know it is easy, but i do not think replacing the input bearing alone would make this gearbox ok.. it got a high pitch whine thru all gears except 4th ofc.
the rattling from the input bearing is the least annoying sound..

I am not sure if it's a piece of cake on a 717.400/420. I heard otherwise with special pullers.

But here is the wrong side starter 5 speed thread mentioned above.

ive heard there is problems with the fivespeeds, inputbearing that gets worn out, and destroys the entire gearbox etc, got a w123 300td with original fivespeed sitting in a container as a spare-car, the only thing that stops me from fitting the gearbox to my 240d w115 is the "fact" that it "isnt durable"....

Rbuljo, im not interested in selling my gearbox, but do you have a OD fivespeed, or is the first gear backwards, and second towards the front on the gearlever?

717.400

starter on right side, for om61x and 280e etc.

1st 3.82 : 1
2nd 2.202 : 1
3rd 1.398 : 1
4th 1 : 1
5th 0.813 : 1

reverse 3.705 : 1

711.110 = G1/18-5/6,15

Gears / ratio

1st gear / 6,157
2nd gear / 3,148
3rd gear / 1,743
4th gear / 1,278
5th gear / 1
reverse / 5,347

711.113 = G1/18-5/4,7

Gears / ratio

1st gear / 4,695
2nd gear / 2,401
3rd gear / 1,436
4th gear / 1
5th gear / 0,806
reverse / 4,078

these are the numbers that i got with the starter on the right side, the w115 also came with a fivespeed gearbox, so there is more than one number...

Cho aswell as another guy in this forum is seeling their fivespeed OD gearboxes for the om617 engine btw.

interesting link, skimmed thru it, but he actually got a LHS starter transmission to work on a 617?! hmm..

Swampmonkey; I got a 5speed with OD as its called. 1st gear is to the left and up as a "normal" gearbox.

this is one gearbox i have access to. could anyone dechiper the numbers for me? what tranny is this? could this maybe be modified to fit the 617?

this are pictures that are mailed to me..

looks to me like they have the gearbox upside down, you dont make any gearbox fit a om617 by turning them upside-down, and thus getting the starter on the right side... Big Grin

if I am right, you are better or equaly good of with a stock w124 gearbox...

and i think the gearbox number we want is on the oposite side of the gearlevers (the side they have taken the photos of)
we only got the housing number so far, we want something like 717.430 or 717.411 hammered into the housing...

EDIT:
a quick google of the gearbox number R126 261 12 01 suggested that that housing is compatible/came from/with a 717.460 Getrag gearbox, (belonging to a om605.962) wich further confirms my thought that this is a "stock" w124/w210 gearbox (this one from a w210 thou) should be quite beefy, but no, unless you get a price as good as any w124 gearbox there is no point in going for that one, unless you are putting down some high TQ numbers from that om617... (and i have no idea if that one is any good)

well i have a set of "inside bearing puller" as i call them.
i dont even think you have to split the trans. most oftenly you can pull ther bearing from the front with this special pullers.
If its a common fault with inputbearing i would defenetly go for a 5 speed 124 gearbox and sell the 617 for gold and diamonds to some entusiastCool

edit: oh and if you really want this gearbox of gold there was one for sale on the sales section on the forum. I think the guy lived in germany? and was planing to move to sweden? but as i said, i think wanted 1500 eruo for a complete set.
