VW Jetta OM606 RWD
VW Jetta OM606 RWD
Hello,
just joined here to learn more about the Om60* series engines.
One of my friends had the crazy idea to convert a VW Jetta from '81 into a rwd car. The engine had to be an OM606 after seeing the famous blacksmoke Benz. So he, myself and another friend started thniking, grinding and welding and created the world's coolest Jetta.
It has 7,5mm elements in the pump and runs a Holset HX40. 90mm straight throug exhaust. BMW Getrag 265 gearbox with Sachs racing clutch on a single mass thin flywheel. Rear end of the car is bmw E30 with a 100% locked 2,65 final drive. Theoretical top speed of well over 300 km/h...
Car made 277bhp 618 Nm wih 4700 rpm limit and original turbo. Output now with big turbo, 6500 rpm and better exhaust and stuff should be over 400 bhp. Powerband has shifted way up so it will get an Eaton M90 to start the turbo going sooner.

Jetta is road registered and engine is legal! it has 130 kw, 6 cilinder diesel on the registrationpapers! Car has been to Austria for big VW meeting last year and he also went to Gatebil with it. He also met the guys from blacksmoke racing there who loved the car.
i'll see if i can find some more pics on the build.
greetings Remco
That looks like a whole lot of really quality work!! Bad ass!!
Could you please share more info/pics on the bellhousing, flywheel and clutch set up?
How much does your FW weigh? Was it custom or off the shelf?
flywheel came from some petrol benz. It was dish shaped but we turned it into an almost flat flywheel. Weight is a guess, we didn't weigh it.. it's a lot lighter then the original flywheel for sure.
Clutch is Sachs racing for old BMW 535i or M5 or something. Single unsprung 240mm plate sintermetallic plate with heavy pressure plate, nr -765 i think it was.
Getrag 265 has removable bellhousing. We cut an old benz gearbox up and welded that part to the BMW bellhousing. The housing was machined flat after that.
Don't have any pictures on those parts.
Further humiliation to the cars they smoke the pants off of, beaten by a Jetta with a pink engine haha
larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?
Beautiful

getrag 265 is found in older 7 series and some big old Opels as well. E30 M3 also has one but with a dogleg pattern. Normal E30 has getrag 240 or 260 gearbox.
there are besically 2 models of 265, normal shift pattern with overdrive V and dogleg with 1:1 V.
These gearboxes have a detachable bellhousing.

Supposedly the G265 could be found in some V12 Jaguars of the 80's. I've never seen one though.
Idk which 5th gear ratio jaguar used; the "dogleg/close ratio/sport" 1:1 (265/5) or OD .813:1 (265/6).

I had a 265 in my 1984 745i turbo and it had 2.93 rear end gears i could do 110mph in 3rd gear here is a video from the new owner
the Jetta has the overdrive Getrag 265 and uses a 2,65 final. Loooooong gears to make use of that torque. Easy 300+ km/h with these ratios (if you have the guts that is, max speed reached until now is about 270 km/h).
It's not ideal for drifting now, needs to be kept high in revs. Hopefully the planned M90 supercharger will help with that.
