+ you need more than just year of the gearbox to give an easy answer, you need the same type of flywheel, singlemass or dualmass, other than that it will fit.
give us gearbox numbers and we can see what we can find out...
like 717.411 single mass
717. 413 dualmass
717.430 single mass and so on.

If I get under the car and put the trans into 3rd bypassing the linkage there is still no 3rd gear.

I'll see what the decimals are later today and I can find out.
His stock transmission should be a 717.410 which is single mass.
The donor should be either a 717.412 or a 717.413 so that's what we need to figure out. If it's the correct flywheel type, he should be good to go?
