OM604
OM604
Hello,
just joined to learn some more about the OM60* series engines.
I'm building a nice daily driver for myself and i need a nice diesel engine for it. Unfortunately it has a rather short engine bay so i cann't fit an OM606 in there and i even wonder if an OM605 will fit.
The OM604 is my last hope. But i've read some bad things about these engines with their crappy pumps.
Is it just as easy to replace the crappy pump with an older OM601 pump as on the OM606? If that's the case i just might get one of these engines, fit a turbo on it and put on the 601 pump. Since it's just a road car i don't need 300 bhp, however 200 bhp would be nice. Is there an easy way to get good power out of the 604?
If anyone has some good dimensions on the OM605 engine i would be very thankful, that engine is so much more appealing hen the 604...
greetings Remco
om604 is a great little engine and yes, the om601 pump fits. You need the pump sprocket from the om601 also (or any other inline pump).
The pump from the 2.3d Vito van has a high RS-number so that might be the best pump you can buy. Even the first 4 fuel lines from the om605/606 fits.

Alfa Romeo Giulia from 1974...
it already has been converted to the rear axle from a bmw e30 so i can use a longer ratio diff. Also changed it to rack and pinion steering.
I have my eye on an OM605 rigt now and would love to put it in the little Alfa but space is very tight lengthwise. not much room to shove the bulkhead back and the VIN number is located in that spot so welding there has to be kept to a minimum.

Or like this?
The later should be super cool with BMW 2002 turbo fender flares.
Like those
We actually have a project 2002 touring with these fender flares on. Coolest car ever, just need a nice v8 to put in it.
Like the green version, 4 door saloon.
no flares for me however, they ruin the lines of the car. i actually narrowed the e30 axle by 8 cm to get the tires to sit in the arches.
Car will be lowered as much as possible and will be painted matt army olive green. no fancy restoration on this car. it's just going to be fun transport for me to go to work with and do the shopping in.
