i have read that the 5 speed in the 190 16v is the same trans as the 5 speed used in some bmw's would that mean that the bell bolt pattern is the same? there is a guy here selling all his bmw stuff cheap to get ride of it (he is moving across the contery) he listed at least 5 5 speed trans would they be good to bolt to a 603/606?

Similar. I think they are similar internals but the bellhousing is one piece or something like that. I looked at a number of them and came to the conclusion they wouldnt work. Also the shifter is different. Probably worth looking at again.

The 16v is a close-ratio, 5th gear is 1:1.

I can tell you the bell housing are different from the same era BMW transmissions even the M10/S14 engines. The bell housings are only removable on automatics. But the backplates are removable, I expect you could tear apart one and fit all the stuff inside the Mercedes getrag or make a bell housing adapter plate. But strait bolt on. No.

i know it is 1:1 i gess i will just find a 16v trans to use instead. I was just thinking if they fit i could get the for $250.

Will a trans from a gas or smaller diesel hold up to a tweeked 603?

I would say that any diesel trans would probably hold up for awhile no guarantee's we are kinda walking on unknown territory the fins like autos and most turbo gasser builds use the M103 trans or the get rag 16V one (Only because all these guys are using a N/A 240D manual for all there cars but I have yet to see anyone use a 2.2D or 2.5D Getrag trans). Which starts having issues probably around 5-600hp on a turbo 16V engines (quoting racing from the 190 boards about installing spray bars and using a special type of fluid to take more abuse) . The M103 trans has held up to quite a bit of a abuse according to most M103/M104 turbo swaps. I've owned a 2.3L (M102.961) manual transmission I wouldn't trust it personally.

Thanks,
Kozuka

I though they we're all about hacking up the 722/S600 trans. I'm proved wrong again Big Grin

What would be the ideal manual transmission for these diesels.
Lets say the om603, and even the om617 engines.

I read kamel has a getrag 4speed on his car, what do those come off of?
Id like to know what to keep an eye out for at the junkyard.

The most sraight-forward to install, reliable stick?
