Alternate manual gearboxes
Wow! What a treasure trove of information I mined from 2 hours on your site!
I have a 1981 NA 300D (OM617) engine mated to a 722.118 auto box, and am thinking of the manual conversion.
As (preferably) 5-speed (4+O/D) boxes are like feathered frogs and 4-speed are almost as rare, and I'm somewhat less than a purist, what options do I have for a non-Mercedes 5-speed manual box? Cast iron would be OK to keep the front end down a bit more. Performance is not an issue, but hassle-free motoring is. Aside from the ancillaries (pedals, master cylinder, etc), what would I need? A W123 bell housing? I'm thinking that a non-MB bell would have to mate with holes in the block, while an original would have to be drilled to fit the non-MB box? A way to mate the driveshaft with the output shaft? Stub shaft if new box is shorter, fixed to flex disc? I'm new at this, but I can visualise what I want. However, time and money usually don't coincide to get the job done , but I'd certainly appreciate any ideas from others more experienced...

I am in the same boat you are man. I want a five speed something terrible, but they are rare and outrageously priced. The 5 speed from a 190 (717.41x) can be mated to a 617 with some custom work. Search the drivetrain threads and you can see where one or two fellas have tackled the job.
I am right there with you. Would love to get a 5 speed. The 5 speed from the 190's are a close ration 5. So 5th gear is 1:1 not overdrive.
What about BMW transmissions from that era. Didn't Getrag make those transmissions too? Might make a bell swap easier. Just thinking out loud.
as Petar said, no w201 or w124 gearbox are 1:1 in fifth except the 717.404 in the 190E 2.3 16v and the 717.450 found in some w124 300E variations, both with that dogleg layout, where the Reverse is forward, and the first gear is back...
Hi, I know I just asked about non-mercedes 4/5 speed boxes, but these have come up in coincidental search. Both are said to be off 57-64 220s. One has change linkages top and right, the other has them both rh side, If someone who knows could tell me if they're suitable for a 300D, I'd appreciate that. I can't quite read the numbers, but the side-linkages one has 115 (among other numbers) stamped on the case. Both appear to have cast-iron cases with Al bells.

A buddy of mine did a motor swap into a 93 Mazda B2600i, using an OM 617 and the manual transmission from the truck. He used the trucks and made an adapter plate, then had a machine shop mate the two flywheels. It weighed well over 50lbs but it ran reliably.
