First of all noob status, I had an issue driving home yesterday my rear end/rear bearings started clunking and grinding. I made it home 3 hours later. Can I change the entire subframe including shafts from a 400E donor to my 1987 300D of course my 300D has 2.65 gears and the 400E has 2.24 but I have a 1994 E320 (2.65) I can swap. This my DD so I'm worried. What are some of the issues I can look forward too. Might as well do the brakes too! Smile

The 400e subframe takes a bigger differential housing than the '87 300d SF. As I understand, if your diff housing from the E320 fits the 400e SF, then they have the same SF.

My 2 cents is that the little diffs don't have a durability problem and you can make a little 2.65 diff LSD using brand new parts for a pretty good price.

Here's some diff info
http://www.w124performance.com/docs/mb/o...ntials.pdf

If you dig around on this site you'll also find a lot of subframe info too.

I was also concerned about using all the parts including the drive shaft to make the swap simple. I read some similar post and none actually said I could do a complete swap.
