BEST TRANSMISSION???
BEST TRANSMISSION???
Ok so im gathering my info on doing an om606 build, selling the 87 benz to fund project.
My biggest dilemma is transmission. .... What is the best route to go?
I really want to have a manual shift... whats the most reliable way to go? Any Mercedes transmissions hold up to 500hp? Or go bmw zf and weld mbz bell on? If so how do I go about that.
My other option is the 722.6 auto. Its gonna go in a 95 w124 so id need a standalone controller? What does that need to hold up?? Again prefer MANUAL. Help
(12-23-2014, 08:48 AM)Petar 5 Speed BMW GS5-39DZ has a great reputation here, never heard of anybody breaking one.
6 speed mercedes has been proven up to 450Hp, 750 Nm by hansebanger.
722.6 is pretty much indestructible when built properly, will hold in excess of 1000 Nm.

Doesn't seem to be any Bmw 530d 5speeds in the U.s. but all the bmw 5speed transmissions ive found do look alot beefier than the mbz trans... are the late 90s early 2000s bmw transmissions rated at all? Or still quite strong?
Benz 6 speeds are 716.65x, used in 220-270 CDI's, those are the strong ones, rated at 370 NM but will hold much more. But you didn't get those in the States
716.60x are rated at 270 Nm i think and they were used in gas powered 4 cylinders. Those you can find in the USA. But nobody here has tried one in a superturbo application, everyone goes for a CDI transmission.
BMW boxes are supposed to be a lot stronger than Benz, i don't know anything about specific models.
ZF that build the BMW transmissions rates them in the gerbox number. A 32dz is rated to 320Nm, a 37dz is rated to 370Nm and so on up to the 53dz that's rated to 530Nm. How ever they are a lot stronger than so. The 53dz is indestructible a would with no problem work in an Abrams tank
I'm right about now developing a bellhousing to use a Tremec T56 BoltOn with the om606 (and other inline Mercedes engines).
Wait 2-weeks and then you can buy one of those from me
Having the first prototype cut right now...
talking to a bunch of guys who dragrace, 1000nm and wheels that is so wide the gap between them is the width of the differential...
the problem is not the gearbox, but cardanshafts etc flying to pieces...
they broke a lot of the sixpspeeds, and then changed to the fivespeed from the 530, witch acording to them was a lot beefier than the fivespeed from the 525...
so, a 530d fivespeed seems to be the way to go if you are going extreme
The tremec sounds like a fantastic idea, with the double overdrive.
Unfortunately it costs more than my car is worth
But it would probably be a viable option compared to a BMW box

A good car is worth the extra dollars
Yea for the US crowd I think the t56 is a good option.

Ballpark on price for these adapters?
(12-29-2014, 10:53 AM)SurfRodder Ballpark on price for these adapters?
Actually not an adapter it's a complete bellhouse.
The drawing is missing some bits and pieces and the plates between the sections.
Ballpark number is $670 + shipping. Have to make a 100% done first one to really know.
There will be an option for racecars to get thicker steel in the bellhouse to comply with race regulation. ball park number for that is +$130

To much stuff to do and still only 24h in a day
Will sort this out eventually. The jig is laying here half done and is just waiting to get done
