Just wondering, is the bellhousing bolt pattern of the OM60x engines unique to diesel engines or is it shared with some petrol engines? I ask because I have a trans from an AMG 55 & to the eye it appears that it would bolt up to my OM605 with only one unused bolt hole near the starter.

Different. You can swap bell housings with another in line transmission of the 722.6 variety. I just did this and it wasn't to bad to do. The pump has to come out and some of the clutch packs but not bad at all. I got a trans from a c230 and it was only $180. Not a bad price for a whole transmisssion.

Yes & no, it can be removed from the main case but K1 clutch drum & the pump are attached to it.

If it doesn't fit then I think an adapter plate is a better option for me, very few 722.6s are available in Aus & they are expensive, & it would cost too much to get a bellhousing & clutch drum sent here.

It's not possible, 722.636 has round bellhousing, if its says 722.636 on gearbox main body then I belive the bellhousing is swapped by someone.

It's not possible, 722.636 has round bellhousing, if its says 722.636 on gearbox main body then I belive the bellhousing is swapped by someone.

Can you please expand on how you can remove the bell housing from the main case?
Do you have any pictures of what the "bell housing" end of the split case looks like?
I know it's a bit strange, but I'm looking at the 6 speed box that's in my Jeep currently. It's actually an NSG370 (same as all the Merc 6 speeds) - so I'm wondering I can split the Jeep box in half, and put the bell housing end of a Merc NSG 370 onto the other half of the Jeep box - that way the shifter will be in the right place, and the output to the transfer case is easy.

Ah, thanks, that makes sense.
I wonder if anyone has tried the "split case" approach I described above to essentially get the bell housing off the Merc 6 speeds.
