w123 resto and upgrade
w123 resto and upgrade
hey everyone I doing a resto on my 240D and want to upgrade the motor, tranny (trying to keep auto), brakes suspension and everything else lol. i want to make her my almost daily driver. my heads been spinning reading all the post of what others have done and looking for some good advise.
1st. motor was planning and putting a gasser in there but want to keep it Mercedes and diesel. so I think I want to go with a turbo om606 not looking to make crazy power 250-300 hp. but no nothing about benz motor and whats involed in getting that kind of numbers. ford, Chevy, mopar, turbo, blowers I know but benz diesel no clue. I want to keep it simple no computers old school mechanical. and if theres anyone that you can recommend on building a set up that would be awesome.
2nd. what kind of tranny will take that kind of power and torque.
3rd. rear diff same as tranny
4th. brakes and suspension upgrades I know about the rotor swap and putting the 4 piston calipers, and there bilstein but is there anything else.
lastly thank you in advance for your help
For the om606 to swap into a w123 you'll need a mechinical injection pump off of the OM603.
The stock internals are practically bullet proof at 250hp.
You won't be able to make that with the stock turbo though.
I'd suggest something along the lines of a KKD manifold and a HY35 or the likes.
The 603 mechanical pump will need to be sent to a shop like dieselmeken, or myna or the likes for larger elements.
722.6 comes to mind for the trans. 5 speed auto, v12 ones are plentiful at the junkyards and are very beefy from the factory. Lower model ones can be beefed up with v12 clutches.
Diff is a tricky one.
Stock diff should be fine, but if you want a bolt in LSD you're looking at a gen1 500se, or a w116 6.9 pumpkin.

hi dads240d,
I have the same project of the car, i have the same engine as you om616. So far i have suited the engine om606.962 with manual gearbox. As mike-81-240d said you have to buy a om603 turbo pump. My setup:
-om606 with om603 ip with sections 6mm
-om606 non turbo dual mass flay weal
-240 mm sprinter clutch (see if it will fit )
-rear diff from 1 gen 126 380 ( 2,47 without LSD )
-front brakes from 2 gen 126 500
Future:
-om603 ip with sections 7mm
-holset h1c
Regards,
Rafal
If 250hp is enough, a 617A can be had cheaply, is bolt in for your chassis, throw a dieselmeken pump, hx30, and intercooler and you're done
great idea but in my case it was hard to buy this engine, and it is an old engine which could have about 1 million km as my om616 which have about 1,2 million km

Also WP brakes has done 2 Front BBK for w123's. They aren't that expensive, I think I got quoted like $1500 for 6 piston.
thanks for the info. im going to start gather all the parts first, then start the rebuild. greatly appreciate the help and info

dads240d,
I agree with most/all the info given already but I think you should buy a parts car to source all the goodies from. Specifically, an '81-'85 W123 300TD stationwagon since they've got thicker, stronger components than the other US models (240d, 300d, 300cd, 300sd).
A rusty, low mileage example can be easily found for less than $1,000 and all complements should bolt right onto your 240d.
If you're having trouble finding turbo wagon parts/car (engine, transmission, sway bars, brakes, etc.) let me know & I'll pull them from a native NY (rusty) parts car I've got in Maryland - or you could take the whole car (partially parted out).
Send the stock turbo "MW" injection pump to Dieselmeken for modifications once you've decided on what turbo you'll be using, add the biggest intercooler you can fit, then assemble & enjoy your newly awakened Mercedes.
This doesn't have to be an expensive build! The injection pump should be the biggest expense but it'll be well worthy the money.
Good luck & keep in touch!
