1986 2.3-16 "Andy"
Hey guys, long time no post. Recently I've been prepping my truck to make it road legal, not doing much with my 16v. Couldn't even find my original thread.
Anyways I've been pondering lately about putting a 602 turbo under the hood of my 16v as my motor setup has been having issues as of late. I have a few things I can try to address my issues, but I don't want to put in a lot of $$$ and have potential mechanical issues as well.
I am wanting to keep this car as it was a gift from a dear friend, but I'm not attached to the history of this car. So selling and getting a factory diesel to keep a stockish 16v on the road is not going to happen.
Anyways I was wanting to compile a list of what I would need to do this motor swap. I am hoping to keep the SLS system as it works well. The transmission shifts well (5spd dogleg) so I won't need to look for one.
Would I be able to use the 16v radiator? Which mounts would I be using, the 602 or the 16v? How would I be getting a tach signal to my tach (minor issue for me)
The rest I can handle, don't forget I got one running in a Mazda before. I miss that thing...

You can get a combo SLS/PS pump from a w124 TE/TD and it should bolt onto the 602 no problem

Radiator might be big enough? Try it, if it runs too hot get one from a 190D 2.5
If the 602 mounts are from a W201 they should work, w124 mounts might even work but I'm not sure? You can check part numbers in the EPC for mercedes and that will tell you what motor mount arms to use.
I'm not sure where the tach pickup is on a 16v? If it reads off the flywheel tabs you're probably fine since that wouldn't be changed. My 603 tach pickup reads the starter ring gear teeth for signal.

Excellent to hear, I figured as much for some. I do know that the 16v radiator is bigger than the 8v. Now to find some threads on swapping it in. Maybe a 603 will fit as well?
I recommend a late 602. 3.0l 603 engines are hard to find with later head castings and none were imported with the later (much better) prechambers, most also have the early lifters that get noisy. There are lots of late 2.5l engines around with all the good updates installed on the assembly line. The 602 also also has less weight and is shorter. You'll have an easier time installing an intercooler with a 602. Late 602's came with the better vacuum pump and gasket. Improved head gasket.
My 603 has a late head, new lifters, late injectors/prechambers and runs great. But my wife's '93 602 is just so smooth and quiet compared to my 603. I bet her injection pump also has the later and better camshaft in it too.
I might be able to find a 602 around me, to be honest it's my preferred choice. Winmutt lives near me though and has a way of finding 603s. So its a matter of availability and swapablity.
A 606, that'd be too much work.
606 man !
602 and 603 is old and not preferably.
And 605/606 will be a much better choice
I can help you source a 606 in Pennsylvania for $800.
Its been for sale a while but I think the price is fair.
Not mine so no guarantees.
I might go with a 605, if I can find one at a good price. But with that I would also need a 602 pump and it would need to be modified, right?
I don't ever see 602 or 605 for sale in the USA.
Where are you going to source them from for how much?
If they're cheap enough I might want one too.
Unless, you're not in Roswell, NM and are really from an advanced civilization!
I have some connections in the used automobile field. While hard I can find a 602. The 605 would be much harder to source and probably cost more.
Ahem...
Looks like 6 seconds to 60 in a 124 with slipping auto trans. Not too bad for 602.
Very nice, yeah a 602 is all I'm really after powerwise. A 603/605/606 is if I get a better deal on one, a second string choice really. But I'm not against one either.
I know that there is a guy either on the rev or on Benzworld that has a 602 powered 16v.
i can get al om60x easy here in europe, also could source for you, just dont know if the shipping cost is going to make it worth for you
I think a 6cyl would add more weight than you need. Definitely do a 602 or 605, you'll fit it in the car a lot easier and have less weight up front.
That is what I'm thinking. I was pricing out 602s in my area, feeling really stupid for not pulling the one out from my former project. I mean, I wanted to but time and resources weren't on my side at the time. I can find NA 602s for a 190 at a decent price. Might have to add a turbo later if I do go this route. At the moment I'm currently working on this in the garage. Trying to figure out why my MS isn't receiving an o2 signal. 3 different sensors and no change, so probably going to need to rerun some new wires.
Found this today:

So it's been done! Of course I'd keep the LSD and not have an open diff.
