What to expect from an OM601?
What to expect from an OM601?
While searching for an OM606, I happened across an OM601 for quite cheap, so I decided to pick up to tinker with and learn about diesels.
I know it is not as popular to turbo and mod as the 5 and 6-cylinders, but I am curious if anyone happens to know what the limits of this engine are (assuming it is in good condition).
The only OM601 I could find online modded for bigger power is the guy on YouTube with the buggy, who claims to have dynoed at 365hp with an HX40 and 8mm elements (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M93735bgYvE), though I am not sure if the motor is stock internally or how long it will last/lasted.
What kind of power would you approximate could be had with an HX35/HE35 and 7.5mm elements? Would it be too much for the motor to handle reliably on stock internals? 7mm elements? I would be perfectly happy with 250-300hp.
Any input is appreciated.
Thank you.
The only om601 worth tuning is the 2.3-liter turbodiesel version from the Vito van. Otherwise you have to machine the block for the oil squirters and change to turbo rods and pistons.
Rods and pistons would be an easy swap if it was a 2-liter. Now the bore and stroke is different witch makes it hard for you. Buy a euro crank and sleeve the block to 87mm and you can run 250hp safe. But for more power you really need to machine the block for the oil squirters.
Would anyone happen to be able to identify what OM601 intake manifold this is?

The owner claims the engine is from a 2.3 Vito (OM601.970), but I was unable to confirm that any of the Vito motors came with such a manifold.
Someone in the thread also suggest that it could be a SsangYong Musso or SsangYong Korando manifold, which do in fact use the same plenum style, but the inlet pipe goes over the valve cover, similar to OM602 and OM603, not downwards as on the pictured manifold.
Thank you for any help.

This is the SsangYong manifold.
