should I pull the trigger on this?
should I pull the trigger on this?
Just talk to the guy, he said he wants an extra $100 for the IP. He said it was running when he parked it. I asked him if he can start it and let me inspect it while its running, and he said he can do that. Buy stuff from Craigslist always seems a little sketchy, but for $450 it seem like its worth a shot.
What should I look for when I go to check it out? Would you guys buy it even if it was running a little rough, or would you pass?
Thanks for any advise!
I just called the guy back because I forgot to ask him how many miles where on the car. Now he tells me the engine is out of the car and he won't be able to start it and let me inspect it while its running. He told me the car had 160,000 miles on it when he pulled the engine. I suspect that probably bullish*t, but who knows.
So now my question is:
Is a 603 out of a 1987 worth taking a $450 (+ $100 for the IP) crap shoot on?
I think I'm going to take a gamble on it, but I'd like to hear your guys opinion?
Thanks again guys!
go for it. buy it and take it apart. Dont STD the thing with out at least going through the top end..
When he says "no problems" I call bullshit, its an almost 30 year old motor! Its gonna have something wrong...
At least he told you on the phone that the motor was out. Instead of you showing up, thinking you were gonna hear it run and him saying "whud-ha-happen-wuz...". Been there, GRRRRRR
Lowball the crap out of it if you do buy it. You might end up with a boat anchor.
If that was in South Texas, I'd snag it even though I don't have a project lined up for not. Seems like a good deal to me, but I'm with Wolverine and say that you try to pull the price down into a manageable range of pain if the engine eats itself.

You could take a piece of fuel pipe connected to a funnel, a battery, jump leads, and a wire to energise the starter and it will run on the deck no? Or am I missing something

Hope it works out. FWIW we talked to that guy a week or two ago and he said it was out of the car at that point so it couldn't be test run. He also said the IP was off the engine and possibly sold. If he did take it off and put it back on hopefully they checked timing or it definitely won't run well. I've seen two cars with #22 head for $1k here in the bay area in the last few months so a gamble on a probably rough shape 603 from an owner who doesn't seem to know whats going on isn't that appealing to me.
He told us a shop was pulling the parts off the car? Seemed kinda sketchy so we decided to pass..
If you end up not buying it, send me a PM. I'll keep an eye out for an engine for you. I seem to come across them fairly often. I know of one with a #17 head but the crank seals need to be replaced. Leaks oil out the front and back of the crank seals. I think the guy wants $600 for it?

(03-12-2015, 11:52 AM)xl.617.lx ... If I do make it out there and the pump is not on the motor I'm only going to offer him a couple hundred. At the same time I don't want to waste the fuel and time driving to Santa Cruz just to see a pile of parts he calls an engine.

You could do worse than drive to Soquel for the day. If the engine proves a disappointment, just drop in at Gayle's Bakery on Bay Ave. and order a nice lunch. While you are at it, get a loaf of their fantastic Francese bread to take home with you.
I used to live in Aptos, and made the trip to Gayle's many times ... wish I could go with you

(03-13-2015, 10:53 AM)xl.617.lx I guess your right, it could be worse :^) If the motor turns out to be a bust I think I'm going to try that bakery you recommended then go relax on the beach for a few hours. The weather has been really nice the last couple days and it should be the same this weekend!
Thanks for the tip on the bakery! Do you still live in northern California?

Might be able to find a 617.. A friend of mine has some, and the guy who owns the storage place I store my 5th wheel at owns a dismantling company and told me he has 10 of them. When I asked before he said $600 for a turbo engine complete so thats not too bad in my opinion. I've seen whole cars go for close to that though. I personally bought one up in sac with a bad trans for $600.
Where are you at in the bar area

606 will be tough to find. I saw a 606 NA engine at pick n pull in stockton once a few months ago. I have an app that searches craigslist every 5 min so I just setup my searches and wait for it to beep
I know a guy in Antioch who works on MB's at his house. He might have a 617 for you. He had a 603 with a #17 head but it needs the main seals replaced. He advertises on craigslist a lot so you may have seen his ads, name is Jeff.
