OK – here we go. I have been lurking and posting the odd thing on here for years, and in the background working on my own project. Very slowly (I have a family and an old Victorian house/gardens in need of work – many of you will understand the eternal trouble of juggling family, home and mucking about with stuff like this).

It all started 2 Christmas’s ago when this happened to my beloved pink w124 multivalve – it got rammed in a car park! It was a wonderful car, but was a bit of a slug so did some searching - I found this forum and started to read. A lot. Then I went for a ride in a mates 500BHP std W124 estate (wow wow wow) – before I knew it i had bought 2 W210 606 cars, one daily and still is and another to scrap out.

So here is the old w210 having its heart removed. Once the engine was out it was in suspiciously good condition, in fact it’s like new. No rust and also an engine plate. The GP’s juts screwed out and all the fittings, castings, paint, water galleries and studs etc are like new. I’m crossing my fingers and will look into this further, but I think there is a good possibility that my £5oo car has a newish engine in it! Lucky basket.

Good bye car – hello happy wife.

Much later on I removed the lovely old RS203 from the 606.910 and sent it off to Goran for 8mm magic. Lovely.

Following this with interest! more more more!

Fellow UK member, same situation as you (sort of) - looking on another quick diesel after having much fun with my old AAZ (1.9td lump in VW's) and wanted something to show a few people that diesels are no longer the slug farm tractors! - Amazing reading on this forum how abroad its all diesel and they're all at it.. Here in UK, you'll be lucky to find anyone in a diesel putting there foot down! - He says, watch 20 people from the UK pipe up!

I've been reading loads as i did with my old AAZ, more i read, more it seems the 606 is the king block, lucky for us in UK as the 210's are left right and centre and no one wants them because they're not 55+ mpg diesels. May i ask whats main reason for the transfer over to the other car? I'm wanting simular and to transplant but is it just purely the other car has alot less electrical nightmares to overcome?

What gearbox you going to run with? Also, if you wouldn't mind, could you PM cost details on import duties once the pumps back.

Cheers ta

L plates, the gearbox I'm planning to use is a merc six speeder from a clk. as for the pump, you can contact Göran directly or contact Luke dale at dieselpumpuk who can supply his pumps. Luke can fit and time up too if you wish.

Druk I have seen your wonderful r107, I lust after it. My w124 is the same colour I believe; I aspire to have a w124 that is in as good condition and as well converted as your SL.

I'll do some more updates in the next few days, this week it's plenum chamber time :-)

Just trying to get my research in before i start contacting, like he will ask how many cc's i wanna push through but as yet that is unknown. With my old AAZ i could ramp that right to max but i couldnt burn it all with my set up so i just adjusted the fueling down, 2 min job one spanner and a flat head screwdriver... these pumps arn't as simple! Was a lot easier to get rough idea's of cost to see performance gains etc. Also everyone transplants these lumps to the older merc's... I've got to look at the transplant complexity and cost, im a weekend tinker type person, rather then a car mechanic. Lots of custom bits with these builds too! Its so hard to say i know but what are you budgeting to get 400 horses from your lump?

Apologies for crap grammar and slang etc but typing on phone again.

Apologies for the quality of the pics! I have not modified a plenum before however the thinking I had was that the chamber volume and the intake hole were looking a bit small so I bought and cut some alloy parts and got a local welder to TIG it all up. It’s all 3” now.

I’m really pleased with the results – it looks right, keeping the stock intake position which suites my car well while increasing flow and volume. The dyno will show if ‘looking right’ and BHP are related…

I also robbed the old N/A throttle linkage from my E300D and made some brackets so that the turbo manifold hold it well. And I also put on some sensor boss’s, originally I was going for more holes, however I only need 2 now, one for the boost gauge and another for the boost ALDA/Turbo controller.

I may add some more plenum pics at the weekend of the finished article.

The other side of the engine and for me the main event. Bought 2nd hand from dieselpumpuk - a KKD manifold, HX40 super and a down pipe that I have modified. I have sprayed a black coating/paint on the manifold and turbo (VHT flame proof paint); Whether it’s any good I’ll find out once I start the old girl up.

Now – On the down pipe is something altogether different - a plasma-sprayed ceramic thermal barrier… The reason I have gone for this high end coating is that the DP runs close to the steering box on RHD cars and I don’t want to cook the seals. This seamed the best option; Plus to coin an American saying I think it looks ‘bad ass’. A friend has it on his entire Cobras exhaust system and it is incredibly effective. There is a boss close to the turbine outlet for a K-Type thermocouple. The DP is 4” out of the turbo, 3” past the steering box and then I plan it to be 3.5” to the tail pipe + 2 large silencers.

When I manage to upload some pictures you will note that the exhaust is mounted to a 6mm plate that goes under one of the engine mounts. I have strengthened and machined 6mm off the other mount – this gives the DP a bit more steering box clearance. I hope this all works out! I’ve spent ages trying to figure out solution to the problems that seem to be around every corner!

I’ll try and get some pictures uploaded later…

The clutch flywheel I have used is a modified sprinter item machined to accept a SRE765 and a custom organic friction disk. On the pic you will see a little boss, this was made so the whole assembly could be balanced. Quiet a lot of work went into this as I had to make sure that the slave was in the correct part of the stroke to work properly..... I have yet to connect a clutch pedal to make sure is works!!!

Gear box mount trial fit. Super.

Anyway , I have been busy and have fitted the gearbox, modified engine mounts and home made gear linkage and so far it's all good! Also all the rad and intercoolers mounts are done. The only concern I have it that the rad mounts might be a little too flexible, however I can sort that later.

Painted gearbox mount and a bit of the gear linkage.

Remember that I suspected that the engine is new? Found this - I'm fairly sure this means it's a genuine merc replacement engine. But can find any history on it. All I can say is that the gallery's are like new and the GP's literally fell out.

well, its alive! engine running, cooling sorted, boost pipes, intercooler etc. All it needs its a clutch pedal and i could take it for a drive! i tell you something, a om606 and 8mm super pump make for an agressive engine, this thing sounds menacing. and it picks up revs like a race car.

Can I ask why you couldn't use the original mount but positioned further back? As there are multiple mount-mounting holes along those chassis rails, plugged with little black bungs. I only ask because I want to use the 6-spd and I thought an OEM mount would work?

Installed:

Planned:

...waiting for a new clutch master to arrive, then i can fit the pedal box. The Braided clutch lineis in, p-cliped up and i'm now starting to put the lights back in and considereing cutting holes into the front bumper for IC air. The Registration docs are with the DVLA being updated from petrol - auto to diesel - manual.

Once i take it out for a test drive i'll do a full review and upload onto Youtube....

Making a fricking exhaust on your own using axel stands is a pita. Clamp it up, mark up, take off, weld up, clamp it up, mark it up etc etc. and that's with out the cock ups. :-( on the upside, getting closer!!!

Making a fricking exhaust on your own using axel stands is a pita. Clamp it up, mark up, take off, weld up, clamp it up, mark it up etc etc. and that's with out the cock ups. :-( on the upside, getting closer!!!

oh my goodness, its alive. No scrap that, its in a disgusting state of health. A good friend came out with me for the inaugural runs and was gob smacked at how rapid the car is in all gears, inc 6th.

I have not touched the boost or fuel settings yet!!!!!

I will do a full write up soon, honestly I'm still coming down from a high as a result of the acceleration.

its a fricking brilliant car!

Looks awesome!! Almost identical to my build that im deep into right now.

I would love to get the same downpipe you have as im not looking forward to shelling out for a custom one here, and have no welding skills myself. Any place you can point me to, to get one? Or would you be able to fab up a copy of yours?

I will definitely be coming back here to read up while im working on my engine transplant.

Cheers!

Dieselpumpuk can make you a whole ss manifold, turbo, down pipe and exhaust system if you fancy.

It is awesome, I'll take some good pics tomorrow and post.

Well i already have my manifold turbo and whatnot, plus shipping an entire exhaust system to the USA would be a bit expensive haha. I was hoping to just pick up a premade downpipe if possible.

I’m now beginning to mess around with the stock settings as I did notice that the power dropped off at higher revs so I increased the fuelling and that sorted that out.

Also the boost rose from 2.2 to 2.5 bar and max recorded EGT from 590 to 605 Degrees C.

So then I increased the duty on the boost controller from 25 to 40% and the boost has dropped back down to 2.2 bar?!

The car still went like the clappers.

Figure that one out?!

Bit of an update.
Early 16” AMG 5 hole alloys fitted with sticky Yoko’s AD08R’s – much better.
The front wheels were too far up in the arches, even with the new springs, so I bought some 4 bump spring rubbers and fitted them. Much improved. Also I suspect that some of the rubbing is as a result of the LCA’s being 25 years old….
I have a new pair of LCA’s ready to fit.
Engine wise she’s been no bother at all apart from herniating a Boost pipe that has been replaced. I have also fitted double boost clamps on almost 5 out of the 8 ends.
It turns out that my HX40super wastegate is set at 2.7 bar standard, I’m happy running it at that for the moment.
Still rabid as hell (it’s a very fast car), spins up in third easy peasy, plus it’s a nice car to drive with the family. A little jerky sometimes at low speeds, but you can easily drive around that.
I will get it on the dyno soon and the Mrs is getting a new PC, so I’ll be able to upload some vids…
