OM617 bellhousing bolt pattern?
OM617 bellhousing bolt pattern?
I am currently in the process of converting my Unimog 404 (gas motor) to an OM617. There is tons of information out there about doing this swap, but it all pertains to keeping the stock cab and body and using a very expensive bellhousing adapter.
I am not keeping any of the stock body (making my 404 a dedicated off-road machine) and therefore do not need to use the expensive adapter that rotates the motor to clear the cab.
I have been told that the bellhousing of the 404 will bolt directly to the OM617 once the Unimog 404 backing plate is taken off of the gas engine, and bolted on the diesel. (Clutch and flywheel are a different story)
What I am looking for is either a picture, or picture with dimensions of the rear end of an OM617 so I can confirm that this 404 backing plate will or won't work.
Thanks for any help.
I don't have the dimensions. But here is a pic of the intermediate plate as installed on a 617.
BTW - How's the Passat running? I still need to deal with that BS.
.
Ha, small world. The Passat is running great, we have put almost 20k miles on it so far and it hasn't missed a beat.
Thanks for the picture. You wouldn't happen to have a picture of the engine without the intermediate plate installed would you? I *think* the plate I have will bolt on, but I will obviously need to measure the motor I am getting to confirm.
The best I can do right now is from oel_brenner's website.

Hopefully someone has a picture at a different angle.
Thanks, that's a great start. I googled OM617 for images but couldn't come up with a shot like that. Thanks for the help.
No, seating position will be moved back considerably. The design will be based on something like this....which is a tube frame built on top of the stock 404 frame/drivetrain
I know this is not definite, but looking at these pics of a m180 bock I found looks to me it will fit.
I have a 617 buried in my storage that I can try to take some measurements off of. The only problem it has the flywheel and torque converter still attached.
You might want to contact peachparts.com member KarTek. He has a 404 also and might be able to help you out.
.
Thanks, I will get a few pics of my M180 block and post them in this thread as well. My buddy who is holding on to my OM617 until I can come pick it up is supposed to call me today when he is standing next to it, and we are going to compare some dimensions and measurements of the mounting surface.
Here are pictures of the M180 flywheel, adapter plate and block from the Unimog 404.

Slightly off topic...
That tube chassis rig is BADASS.

Does the Unimog have a divorced transfer case?
if so, you may find the sedan transmission to be a better match to the engine and the clutch or torque converter would already be balanced to it.
Would just need mounts and likely a custom drive shaft. this would likely be cheaper and more reliable than doing all the R/D on the flex plate.
most of the G-wagen people who do the swap end up finding the sedan tranny to be much smoother than the stock one. the automatic should be really nice off road with proper differential gearing.
it might be worth calling Sean or Steve at eurotruck-importers.com. those guys likely know someone who's already done what you're doing.
