FOR SALE: 5 Speed OM617 Getrag 717.400 PLATE
FOR SALE: 5 Speed OM617 Getrag 717.400 PLATE
For sale:
The ONLY drop-in five speed transmission for the OM617.9XX engine is the Getrag 717.4XX, and for the turbo OM617.952, it's the Getrag 717.400 (others in this family have less than optimal gearing).
I am selling the adapter plate which goes in-between the engine and tranny. A person wanting to do the conversion, will need this part.
I have two of them.
$325 EACH shipped CONUS. CONUS = Continental United States. Includes $300 worth of insurance.

The gearing of the Getrag 717.400 is
1st 3.82 : 1
2nd 2.202 : 1
3rd 1.398 : 1
4th 1 : 1
5th 0.813 : 1
reverse 3.705 : 1
And to clarify, I only know that this plate will work on those wanting to convert to the 5 speed Getrag 717.400. I am pretty sure it is the same for the 717.401, but I do not know this 100%.
Wait wait wait. I could swear the 717.400 was bolt on for ALL OM616/617 engines ?? I have the 717.400 in my car but it came installed when i bought so i'm not 100% sure if the rear plate of the engine is the same as the 4 speed. This is the first time i hear about this
I am only referencing a 5 cylinder OM617.9XX engine. I have heard that the Getrag 717.400 does bolt up to the 4 banger. I guess I should be more specific.
This plate is needed for the 5 cylinder. I don't know if this plate will work with the 4 cylinder, but what's the point of a 4 banger and 5 speed?
This plate is different than the plate used on the 4 speeds. So, as stated, if someone wants a drop in replacement 5 speed tranny, they will need this plate with the OM617.9XX engine.
Apparently the Getrags had a different adapter plate to the older boxes, something about locating pins? Not sure.
Any chance you can read the numbers on the plate?
As far as I knew there were no difference between 4/5 speed adapterplates.
I have a 717.400 lying in the garage close to a 617.912 with a 4 speed manual adapterplate. I can bolt it up and confirm wether it fits if you want?
Also give you the number of the plate. (Probably the same that is on yours?)
Not trying to ruin a good deal for you.
Just interested in knowing wether there is any difference between them.
I understood there was a difference because someone already tried using a 4 speed plate; however, if you're saying that the 4 speed and 5 speed plates are the same, then I do need to yank the "for sale" posting.
I will have to find the thread where someone tried it already and it did not work. That is, someone thought the same and when it came time to mount everything up, the plate would not work.
Sale(s) is/are now suspended since I cannot confirm 100% that this plate is now unique to the 5 speed. Sorry. If the plate is not unique, then bonus to the two forum members who already contacted me about buying one. If the plate is unique as I initially thought (and still do), I don't know if I feel 100% comfortable selling them based upon the few contributions by forum members about this plate. Again, sorry since this part is needed for the conversion. I'd rather be safe than sorry or have someone upset over what they bought.
My understanding is that the plate is different for the 5 speed; however, there were a handful of smart asses on other forums who claimed they are all the same. I got a plate from an auto and it will not mount up because the pins are different and the bolt holes are off a hair. So, I can say they are different from what I can tell, but it's not worth the headache dealing with the forum experts at this point since I received so much negative feedback on this plate. Interesting thing is that the experts probably never even saw an 717.400 five speed so not sure how they know so much. I still have the plate and verified it will mount up with the 5 speed Getrag 717.400. I am guessing there could be a bunch of different plates, with some working and others not. I have no way of concluding if there are plates which are interchangable. I have learned a long time ago to not argue with the forum experts as 90% of the time they have no earthly clue what they are talking about AND they have ZERO experience with the topic they speak with so much authority about ... lol
Oh the forum experts that don't have any dynos, videos or legitimate builds? The ones giving advice to people that actual build and work and complete projects?
Greazzer hands down my favorite post I've read in a while. These highly opinionated individuals are not worth any rebuttals. They have nothing better to do in life but comment. If this post were about women's clothing they would probably be an expert on that subject as well.
