I've got a w123 300TD that I've been trying to get on the road for years. I assumed the engine was fine and went ahead and redid the entire front and rear suspension, pulled the motor to paint the engine bay (changing the color of the car eventually).

But now I've got a crappy motor. I'm getting the head tested but a previous owner cut part of the upper oil pain so he could put it in an offroader. On top of it it doesn't appear that this motor was taken care of.

Now I'm having a hard time finding a good  617 long block or wagon motor to put back in.

But I've run across a 3.5 OM603 and a few OM603s for decent money and mileage. And against my better judgement (since I wanted a drop-in motor) I'm wondering if anyone has put a 603 in a w123 before.

it is possible to do it. i mounted om606 in w123. i used w126 om603 engine mounts. w123 chassis is wider than w126 and you need use 2 spacer, 2cm in turbo site and 1cm in other site. in this spacer i move engine about 2,5 cm back. In this case i don't need to cut oil pan. and engine fan works without problem. Here you got my photos. if u have any question send me pm.

I did a 603 in a w123 wagon. It was incredibly easy. I use diy engine mounts but there are some plug and play out there. I don't know which type of Mercedes they came of. Hopefully someone can help you there. The w126 do fit indeed with minor modifications.

I'd say... Go for it!

I will be doing this as well this winter. I think will be a fun project! I just hope I don't go to all this work and then crack my #14 head...

What trans did you guys use? Did you end up using a custom driveshaft? Or modify one?

And for the wagon, what type of SLS pump did you use? Or did you delete the system?

The rear transmission mount was easy adjustable by drilling holes. I don't know if engine mount will still fit, thats why I used DIY mounts. Driveshaft didn't need changing in this situation.

I'm curious as to the feasibility of using the 603 engine mounts. Did you try those at all or was using a diy mount just easier?

The w124 TD has a combo pump for power steering and SLS. You can use that to keep SLS in the w123 TD or get the delete kit that has stiffer springs.

No I did not. To be honest... I thought a plug and play engine mount didn't exist. So I just fabbed them. Later I found out that there where indeed plug and play mounts out there.
