R129 brake calipers fir W124??
Hi!
Do the R129 calipers fir the W124 hub?? There's a whole brake setup going cheap and I'm tempted. 300x28mm, 4-pot caliper. It's of a early R129 with pressed ball joints, so no throw-away A-arms needed (just rebiuld mine), unlike with all the other MB 4-pots.
Price to pay: 16" wheels. But that's what I'm runing anyway... R129 steels, 8x16 - such awesome!

Yes they fit, with ball joint clearance being the issue. It looks like you've gotten that taken care of though. The 201 EVO2 came with 129 spindles. They use a bigger bearing- less flex. I'd grab the spindles too if you can.
Not all R129s have fixed ball jonts, that's the whole pont Te early ones, even the V8, got pressed ball joints - same as W124
Bigger bearings would also go well with the wider wheels!
As for rear brake - I have no idea yet. 320SL has solid 278x9mm apparently. Same as W124 wagon... Sounds all a bit too good to be true
95 E320 wagon in the US at least had 290x10 rear brakes. They were also used on most W210s shipped to the US so I got those for the 300D. I would also switch to a 25/19 or 25/21 master cyl.

Wagon, yes. Due to possibly higher load in the rear, resp. different weight distribution. I think a SL is fairly similar to a Coupé, hence I think 278mm rear is sufficient. TÜV will tell me what I have to change anyway
500E also got 278mm rears, but vented.
Bigger master is a good idea, I think I'll change this too.
R129 booster fits fine - 500E booster is better suited though, as the vacuume connection is on the other side. R129 connection is on right side - VERY tight, but fits JUST. I had to "carefully" modify the firewall a bit... Brake lines need bending to fit. Master needs to be installed before you tighten the servo - servo needs to be tilted a bit to insert the master cyl.
Calipers & discs are bolt-on plug & play.
But wiring harness needs to be changed also, for twin wear indicators (std. has only got one). Also plug & play. Connectors fit.

Std. dust shields fit also - but I may swap them over nevertheless...
And: NO WAY do 15" wheels fit. Even W211 7x16" ET33 steels are too tight to fit over the calipers... I'll investigate more wheel fitments as soon as I can get my fingers on them. R129 & 500E wheels will fit, naturally. 8x16" ET34 15-holes, 8-holes and 8x16" ET35 steels.
As per R129 I'll change to wagon rear calipers with 278x9mm solid discs. Dust shields (I have a Coupé w. 258x9mm std. rears) will need replacing (PITA!!) or modifying. 278mm discs don't clear the std. sedan/coupé dust shields. Unless the vented or non-vented 278mm discs are allready fitted (M104).
Result: I need to throw up when I stomp the brakes... But they'r still not "aggressive" like modern brakes and allow very comfortable breaking & good dosage of stopping force. Very nice!
The rotors being thicker tend to hit the A-arms. I used a grinder and made clearance on mine to fit the 400E brakes in the front. I now have some late w124/R129 spindles and steering knuckles which should make everything fit better.
If you have a '93 300D I think your A arms have the welded ball joints that aren't replaceable, so the larger brakes should just bolt on. You can check the EPC with your car's VIN, it might have the R129 steering knuckles and spindles already. I forget what year they switched to all of that. The calipers will bolt right up no problem, the issue you will have is the rotor hitting something.
The R129 300mm roto clears any a-arm. Welded a-arms are only found on cars with M104 or M119 engine with 320mm brakes.
All you need to fit R129 300mm disc & caliper to a W124 is: calipers & discs. And if you want it done properly, master, booster and the pad waer indicator wiring loom (also plug & play).
The later 320mm brake requires welded ball joint a-arms again.

All other 4-pot brakes - welded ball joint a-arms...
It's realy not that difficult...
