W210 ECU Conversion (DSL1)
W210 ECU Conversion (DSL1)
I figured this topic could probably use its own topic and Baldur please chime in if you know.
I'm considering getting my hands on a DSL1 controller and manual/trans controller. I currently own a 1997 and a 1998 w210 e300 and was wondering how the car would react to not the OG ecu. The 97 has the older switchblade key-type system and the 98 has the newer type. I'm concerned about systems like ignition, ABS, ASR, SRS, climate etc.
Is it possible?
I can't really say as I haven't tried running a W210 without the ECU in place.
The safe way to approach this is to leave the ECU in place and only remove its connections to the sensors and actuators on the engine.
But people have converted W210s to use mechanical pumps, maybe they can chime in on what functions were lost in the process, then I can evaluate what needs to be done to regain those functions.
The cruise control would go if you go with a mechanical pump, the fuel stop solenoid on the side of the pump needs the ECU to allow it to unlock (although you can bypass it), also if using the OEM turbo, the vacuum transducer works via the ECU as well so you would need to convert that to a pressure wastegate. I think other functions like ABS/SRS etc might also stop working but I am guessing that the DSL1 controller would get round that by emulating the ECU (which is locked to the cars VIN) - let me know how it goes as I will be looking to run the same combo as you at some point.
I have a W202 that was converted to a mechanical pump by the previous owner. The ECU was left in place and everything seems to work in the car except:Tachometer- a flywheel without the trigger pins was installed so there is no rpm signal, ASR doesn't work of course, ABS works fine. Also AC doesn't seem to work but i suspect it is due to the lack of rpm signal. I have no idea why the PO did the conversion.
It had a 722.6 stock but now has a 5 speed manual.
Note that if you wan't the tach AND more importantly coolant temperature gauge to work the ecu must stay there !! The sensors are used by the ecu and then the information is sent via CAN to the instrument cluster.
Leave the ECU in place so the key and clocks work. You'll need to remove the bulbs in the cluster behind the BAS & ASR warning lamps because they'll be on.
I've looked into this, and disconnected the EDC IP and turned the ignition on to see what would happen (just the above 2 warning lights).

Or just the key and ecu ?
