What pilot bearing works with the om602 and the 717.411 transmission? Would the 190e 2.3L (8v) pilot bearing fit, or is there an adapter bearing that is needed due to the ID on the om602 crank being different than the 4 cylinder gassers?

I've also read references to a spacer and cap that accompany the pilot bearing, but I cannot tell whether this is for the dogleg gearboxes, or the gearboxes with the shorter input shaft. Are these needed with the .411, and if so, are they available? If NLA, what is the depth of the spacer that's needed (so I can machine one...).

Thanks in advance!

My 603 has a 4cyl gasser pilot bearing.

I think there is a spacer. I tried stacking 2 pilots but it looked like it protruded to far. I don't use a spacer now and I'm certain the input shaft sits in the bearing. If you're worried about it, an acetal/delrin spacer should be quick and easy to make.

Thanks, Ray!

Should the pilot bearing sit flush with the end of the crankshaft?

You don't need a spacer the pilot bearing from the 2.2 601 or a gasser fits. It should fit flush at end of the crankshaft

Mine does not fit flush unless there's 2 bearings installed. I put grease on the end of the input shaft and tightened the trans to the block, removed trans and looked at the grease. The grease was pushed all the way to the part of the input shaft that gets wider for the splines. That made me worry that it was putting a thrust load on the pilot. I installed the trans with one pilot pushed all the way back in the crank and decided that the pilot was still supporting the input shaft. A spacer that's thinner than a 2nd pilot would help push the pilot bearing farther up the input shaft but not too far.

Here's the diagram with the installation order:
http://www.mbpartsworld.com/showAssembly...evel=20554

You're looking at #101, 113, and 107.

Part #'s
1110310251 spacer $3
1159800115 pilot bearing $47.50 (I got mine at Napa auto parts and I think it was $10 or right around there, just ask for a 1982 240D pilot bearing - it's the same one)
1020310133 cover $4.90

The spacer isn't very thick but without it the bearing can slide too far in and won't "properly" support the input shaft of the transmission. It'll still work but the shaft will only be partially on the bearing. I'm not saying you HAVE to have it, or it WILL NOT WORK without the spacer. But for $3 at the dealer why would you not just buy one? Wink

'98 E300 Turbo "Juliette" - Brabus wheels and almost all the options a w210 could have
'87 300D Turbo "Roxanne" - #22 head - 400E brakes - EGR Delete - 17" Staggered AMG 5 spoke rims from CLK500 - 5 Spd manual
2007 Chevy 2500HD CCSB Duramax with about 400-500 rwhp depending on the tune I use Big Grin
1983 300D Silver Exterior/Black inside - Sold and will be missed, may we never meet in a PnP.
