Hi all,
I've found an hx55 at a very reasonable price, and I'm getting a little excited about the prospect of buying it. Before I do a stupid, can someone explain how well an hx55 will spool with an om606, and what size exhaust housing I'd need in order to get it boosting before 7k rpm, and in first and second gear?
I say 7k rpm because by the time I've built a manifold and have a pump that will fuel the turbo, I hope to have a set of upgraded valve springs too from f-tune.
Any help would be much appreciated as I can't seem to find anyone running such a large turbo without a compressor.

holset crap 55 is a huge thing , maybe is good to match behind or in front a 35 in a series arrangement.
and must have a heavily modded head to cope with that thing ... but turbos is not my expertise ... reading some threads may help u.

well as far as my understanding goes:
imagine that this hx55 has a 72mm turbine, u can only fit that turbine in a 72mm housing, or in a modded 70mm lets say, the hell is that if u can find such a housing with a interesting A/R lets say .70, and even in this case being the turbine so big i fear it will only spool very high in the RPM. (big turbos are for big engines and big engines breath cubic hectometers of air instead of cubic meters.
Now lets see the compressor side, that thing is some 90 something mm compressor so will take time to gain momentum, and in the end take time to spit out , and again since it is built to move cubic hectometers of air , don´t expect the delta pressure to be too high. (law´s of nature and mechanics). this beeing said without a compressor map to analize it becomes very risky to use the compressor in a HX40 turbine, if u can folow my point.
I belive that for a 606 a improved compressor in a hx35 would compress as much as u need. The other way is increasing delta pressure by series turbocharging and for that maybe the HX 55 can do the trick. have no idea... i believe no one does

well if I have understand things right HX50 and HX55 i about the same, but turbine is bigger, bearing and shaft on the HX55, I get some time ago suggestion from Pekka on Herlevi -"turbo can be hx 50 compressor 63mm and exhaust 73mm exhaust housing size 14-16cm3 for 200cc" in single turbo set up, I never tested it my self since I went a different road.
if your desire to use HX55 as in serie set-up, I guess I woul prefer HX55 to a HX50 in serie set up when they work together all the way, it will be way easier to spool in serie then as single and response will be better and ability to build boost depending on big exhaust house and turbine, but use a nother preferable a smaller turbo with higher a/R on compressor side to work with it and I can not see why it will not work, but it is way more complicated.
But be aware serie/compound is not an easy thing to calculate and to start calculation you need in the first place know what you want the turbos to do, even more experience people have not succeeded well in my personal opinion, there I do not suggest you shall not succeed.
I have way bigger LP turbo in any way then HX55 but it is not a holset, the reason why I do not like Holset is that I have not been able to find turbo machinery technical parameters needed for turbo calculations, and -"jag köper inte grisen i säcken"

What power are you looking for with your setup?
hx55 you are looking for 600hp, a bit too big for 450hp goal. hx40 would give you that power and torque too. With 55 you don't get near max boost in small gears.
I had om606 with 7mm mynä and master power mp58r2 (compressor 65mm and turbine 68,8mm) and it did give max boost around 4000rpm in 374whp range. I drove like that maybe 1year as a daily, just needed to drive with big rpm's because nothing happened in down low (200nm at 3000rpm isnt that good).
I made 315whp with stock manifolds, T3 adapter and 8cm hx35 so it's about 375hp from engine. Next I made 433whp with hx40 which is over 500hp from engine and some guys get 600hp from hx40. Last dyno I made 505whp from hx52 with wg problems and I plan near 600whp with HX52.
HX55 is more like 700++ hp turbo, it's huge compared to hx40.

The talk of hp is interesting, but you should have some idea of what air to fuel ratio you are aiming for, and what rpm you want the power to be available. Anyone making 500hp with an hx40 is running super high egt and probably smoking like hell while they do it. Good for burnouts lasting a minute or so, but not good for road racing or sustained high power use.

Then the advice erx gave above is great. What's wrong with putting an hx35 8cm on the stock manifold? Sounds like a great solution.
I mean 400-450 whp is going to require an hx40 with smoke or an hx50 or 52. The he451 has no internal gate and they are difficult to find, but otherwise would likely spool sooner than the 52.
