Oil temperatures
Oil temperatures
Just wondering what sort of oil temperatures people are getting with regular daily driving and with what oil.
I've had a good search of the forum but didn't come up with much. I'm just curios and wanting to compare. It would be interesting to see what different people are using in different parts of the world with different climates
i have a sensor that replaces the drain plug on my 617 and i regularly see ~120-160*F at cruise. when climbing a grade or at high speed it gets up to around 200-220*F. im working on installing it in the main oil duct in the block to read actual temps as the sump cools quickly and is not a true reading but those are some data points for you. mind you the 617 has a thermostatically controlled air to oil cooler i don't know if the later 60X engines use the same set up or an air to water cooler in the cooling circuit.
These engines can get very hot. Oil water and EGT; My advise is fit a large oil cooler!
I don’t know what my temps are however I have a medium sized (space restricted) oil cooler plumbed into the oil filter tower (that is thermostatically controlled).
I use Mobil1 Turbodiesel as its stable at high temps and I change it every 2k.
I have pretty much same temperatures in 606compound measured from the same place than R-3350's 617 has, oil drain plug.
Stays in 120-160f at normal driving. With hard driving or slow city driving it goes near 200f. I have original 603turbo oil cooler and original thermostat controlling it.
I'm getting about 100'c on normal driving and about 110'c on heavy driving using 10w40 oil. That's using the standard oil cooler on the side of the oil filter on the 605. It never goes over those temps but it does seem a little high compared to everyone else's. I might have to put on an external oil cooler.
That's ok then. I was getting a bit worried that they were 2 high and would cause failure. The coolant temp stays at 80 all the time. Not had it in summer yet tho. That's with the coolant mod pipe and using the big radiator thats in the l200 with twin 16" fans. Electric thermostat is set at 70c for the fans. I'm paranoid about overheating.

It's going to be tight, that's also what she said..
