I have a chance to get an 2006 w211 at a good price but has some issues-namely injector(s). The engine has 226,000 miles on it. The owner says that he has replaced 2 injectors already at a price of $1200 each time. Sounds a bit pricey to me. He said when it happened each time he smelled raw diesel in the cab followed by smoking in the engine bay. Is this believable and is there anything else I should look for about the engine with that many miles? Maybe consider a junk yard lower mile engine? Or plan on having all the injectors rebuilt by a respectable Bosch rebuilder?

Hmmm that sounds like CDI black death. Copper heat shields under the injectors start leaking and if not caught in time cement the injectors in black goo. The injectors can be damaged in the removal process. Pay attention to if there is a chuffing noise replace heat shields and clamping bolts before more damage is done. It's a common problem but inexpensive and easy to fix if caught in time. 1200$ seems a bit steep to me but I'm not in the USA. Here a used injector is about 100eur and a full rebuild shouldn't exceed 200eur per injector.

Take your time and soak the injectors with a solvent.  They can be had for much less $ from a Bosch rebuilder...

You can soak all you want.. that black shit is resistent. You have to heat engine to 100-110°C.. yeah that much, stop cooling fan, block cooler hose. Then black shit softens and you can take out injectors. But cleaning injector seats without special equip. is difficult to say at least.

Ex: 525tds 130kW, C250TD 160kW, E320CDI 200kW, ML400CDI 230kW, A6 R5TDI 130kW
Now: Q7 V8TDI 240kW, 320d 150kW, 335d 210kW
