605 Direct Injection
605 Direct Injection
Hello fine people!!!
Finally its time for step 2 of the 4 valve 602.98X!!!
Injection pump will be a PES5M80, ford transit TDI injectors and my question for the forum :
What should be the injection time for idle and high speed advance?
Starting with a close timming will spare me a lot of assle...
Thanks in advance
i would say set it to the stock timing of a 602.98X however that is quite different as its a rotary pump. i would think that with DI there will be more of an ignition delay thus requiring more timing to run properly. i might start at the stock 605 timing plus 4*. as for the advance mechanism im not sure what the stock unit adds total i know on a 617 its 7.5* total time at max advance. for a DI engine to keep it from falling on its face at higher rpm id look at adding 10-12* with the advance mechanism. mind you all this is a guess at best but if you can get it to run ok then just tune it by ear and driving it till you are happy.
on another note i have been following your engine build and am excited to see the finished product. i was looking at importing a 602.98X to play with however they are hard to find and expensive at least here in the US. what are you doing for the pistons since the valve relief and combustion bowl are offset for the two valve head of the 602? good luck and i hope it makes lots of smoke from the tires and exhaust.
With Volkswagen mTDI engines, we are used to set the static advance such, that at TDC, there is 1.00mm plunjer lift...
However, the pump that killed my Scirocco was an exception, and 1.00mm was waaaay too much, I dont know why.
Mr R-3350,
DI uses much less advance than IDI. Injection happens later in the cycle a lot later. My question is about dinamic timming so that i can avoid uninstalling and installing pump several times.
This engine stock pistons have the bowl offset just the right amount to match the 4 head valve if u turn them 180°. In my case i dug valve pockets. But the need depends a lot on how u plan the valve train.
U got plenty of those engines in there. Almost every dodge sprinter before 2002 got one.
Regards.
the sprinter was introduced to the us in 2001 with an om611 or 612/647. we never got the 2.9 engine here. as for the timing i know from some american engines that use inline pumps for DI that they run around 25-35* BTDC injection timing. the 8mm M pump i have is running 17*BTDC timing according to a piezo sensor on the number one injection line while i installed it at 14* ATDC. the issue is the rotary pumps time differently so the spec to set them is quite different.
