I was wondering what as the best alternator is to use on a om606 engine?

Depends on whether or not you have molested the bracket / mount and what vehicle you are putting it in. OE is Bosch and they are plenty powerful enough, provided it's the original unit. Diodes are heavy duty, bearings should ALWAYS be replaced if unknown, and reg pack/brushes also. On w210 the pulley is a clutch type which requires special splined tool to remove. get rid of it - it's a POS and use standard non clutch type - w124 style.

depending on market the version is internal (caged) or external fan(front) and 115-120A.
I rebuild these units a lot and all they ever need is bearings and a slight skim on the commutator, new brushes. Hardly ever does the stator need replacing or diodes - only when the unit has been mega-abused from stupid high mileage and zero servicing and fuckwits that pressure wash the engine bay.

The "best" units in my experience are the older external fan style, They seem to suffer less damage and are usually much cleaner internally, as opposed to the later cage style castings.

I would not use a valeo unit if my life depended on it.

The last option available is the super-massive Leece-neville / prestolite 160-320A J180 mount (they also have a pad mount version, but you'll need to fab a plate style bracket, like the ac compressor style)
You can get these in self-exciting versions as well as 'conventional' types, and they are more or less a fully sealed unit (electrically) and very robust. If you want to weld, they also have direct AC from the stator to posts where you can attach external rectifiers and beef up the current handling to 400A with external reg/rec setups.

If you want to know more about that, Alternatorman over in the US sells the external reg/rec units as an assembly and while most work with the delco style alternators, they can be used on any alternator - you just need to know what you are doing.

On my OM 606 4x4 conversions I use the 180 amp. alternator from the bigger gas sedans. It has the same mount as the 210 chassis and is a bolt on, you just have to change the pulley to the diesel clutch type.

If you take off the one-way clutch on a 115A alternator, the belt will last about a week. The clutch is there to handle non-uniform rotation of the engine. You also get better current output with the clutch at idle due to the fact that the alternator spins faster than the average speed of the engine.

I agree that using the one way clutch on the alternator is advisable and a good idea. I did NOT use the one-way clutch on my setup because I'm running a Ford alternator on my 606 (because my alternator communicates with the ECU) and I couldn't mount the clutch on the ford unit.

I was advised against doing this (here) and promised to return and eat crow if my belt failed in short order. For the record, I still think it's good advise BUT- I have been running with this setup for about a year now (about 10k miles) on the same belt with no ill effects. No belt failures or even squealing to date. Do I believe using the 1 way clutch is better for belt life? absolutely- but I haven't experienced the extremely short life predicted here.

Haha... most cars with 605 and 604 use no clutch ....601 m111 and so on... all use same bosch alt no free whell unit...
I wander where people got that idea...

Three burned up belts explained the issue to me. All with the E300 factory 115A Bosch alternator. Similarly seized pulleys on the G300 factory 85A alternator had no failures, but did make the idle feel rougher. It is the mass of the alternator and the time spent at idle that makes the difference.

Usually alternators without clutch have smaller amp and lighter rotor. I haven't tried alternator without clutch on om606 but I have experienced two seized clutch failures on 220cdi and 270cdi. 220cdi threw belt off few times and 270cdi squeaked like crazy when turning steering wheel at idle.

It seems to be 03 - 08  SL55  CL55 E55 AMG.  I just typed in 180 amp Alt. on E-bay and it brought them up. . I just compared the mounting ears to the 210 E-300 Alt.
