how many quarts needed when you change the filter and reinstall the pan?

4 quarts or 5 quarts?

It's more like 2-3 in the pan! The system holds 9ish but most of it is tied up in TQconverter and cooling lines and pumps/trans internals

No point in bothering to change the filter if you're going to leave 2/3 of the old oil in the system. The TC is just a 5mm allen key away from draining.

Total, it holds 8 and some change. But start at 5 and top up from there.

I use M1 manual tranny fluid in my ZF 5 speed, since it has no corrosive EP, it works out quite well, I also use it on my transfer case and diff. Chevron also makes an excellent boron based manual tranny lube which is safe for soft metal synchros used in ZF manual tranny.
