Hi every one what will it take to mount ML320 wheels on a W123. Has any one tried this yet.

I need a super strong set of wheels for my 1983 300TD.

Any other ideas I would love to hear them.

I'm willing to use H&R spacers or raise the car if I need to.

I heard the old 14" wheels are "too soft" to use for rally.
Any ideas on that. Maybe they where talking about 240D aluminum wheelsHuh

Generally speaking, steel wheels should be better for off pavement. You can also get them widened and fix the offset as needed to suit your needs. You could even get a set custom made with all the specs you need. I don't think they cost that much.

I know the bolt pattern should fit, not sure about backspacing and clearances. One thing to worry about with aluminum wheels is they crack when the bend. Not a big deal if you do aluminum welding but steel might be the way to go.

I agree. Steel is better suited to racing because its not as brittle.

I agree, it would be really nice to have some custom steel wheels. I'd go for 15x7.5 or 15x8. I saw a video on youtube that was just a compilation of pictures of W123's which featured one car with wide steelies, but I have since been unable to locate it.

Dont forget about the whole unsprung weight routine. I would think plain old steelies would be the way to go.

I got these 18 inch AMG SL wheels from a 129 body to fit. Sledge hammer helped make it possible.

What did you have to do to make these fit? These are the rims I want to put on my 300D but wasn't sure if there would be fitment issues or not. Seeing them on your car is inspiration.

Air dam and side skirts are from an 80's Volvo (!?) Yeah I know, but I couldn't find a Benz one cheap and I like the look better anyway. Actually the side skirts are from a 90's 850 Volvo. Exact right length.

To make the front wheels fit required some stretching of the wheel arches to get the tires to clear. Forget doing it without ruining the paint. The whole lip and a bit above it must be bowed out somewhat. The chrome molding bows a bit now too. Not at all obvious unless compared to a 123 that's sitting right next to it.

The rear wheels have no clearance issues at all as far as the outer lip is concerned. Since these rims have a deeper backspacing compared to the 123, the clearance issue is with the inner fenderwell. I drove the car a bit with the big tires and found out where they rubbed and then bee-lined those areas with a big sledge hammer. It took a few attempts to get all the rubbing spots to go away but I got it now. A quarter inch spacer in there would probably save your having to beat the hell out of it. I preferred not to do it that way but would be easier.
