Parallel identical turbos fed by three cylinders each. One external wastegate operating both turbos. Oil sump and hence no oil pan. Instead of oil pan an A/W intercooler. Turbos in series with supercharger and supercharger operates all the time. Combined max pressure about 5bar. Additional A/W cooler in the intake manifold.

Engine will also be mounted really back (~40cm) in the chassis and I'd bet that's why valve cover has been made lower

Thats because the turbine inlets are positioned differently so you are seeing the smaller part of the lower turbine snail.

Don't worry, I thought the same thing for a bit. Wink

Dang - there must be something in the water in Finland.
I've seen some very interesting work come out of that country.

It looks to me that this would be a full on drag race engine only, you'd have to put an IC for any other use. Anyone know what IP they're using? I can't tell where the lines go after they dissapear down beside the intake.

Telecommbrkr It looks to me that this would be a full on drag race engine only, you'd have to put an IC for any other use.

They might be using water injection. A great many purpose-built diesel drag racers and pullers run without an IC of any kind and just spray a ton of water down the intake under boost.

Due to the expansion properties of water turning to steam, this alone is good for 30-50hp on a Cummins 5.9L B-series engine. To make the mix a little 'hot' - some use various concentrations of methanol or just dump windshield washer fluid in the reservoir. This is good for 60-80hp. You have to be careful with the methanol, though - its flash point is very low - so it preignites well before the diesel fire gets going...effectively advancing the ignition timing quite a bit. This effective timing advance along with the increased cylinder pressures can and will degrade the head gasket if it isn't properly taken care of. 12mm+ head studs and an o-ring'd cylinder head will take care of that.

To take it one step further - the engine can be prepared for fire rings. To do this, a head gasket that has had its OEM fire rings removed with water jet or laser cut is necessary. Grooves are cut into the head/block and then a stainless steel ring is set in place.

Matt

Wow - one gallon sounds like a lot. I know people that go through a quart or two in a 1/4-mile pass or a single sled pull. My Dad's truck will empty the reservoir (2-quart) in two or three good pulls on the highway...he's running the two biggest nozzles that come with the kit and it's still not quenching. (link)

4000rpm is pretty good for a common-rail, or VP44 ISB, but that's old hat for a 12-valve B-series. Folks commonly let the clutch out at 6500rpm with those during competitive events.

Looking at the first picture in this thread, it looks to me like they are set up with some kind of aftermarket clutch setup, unless that is something they are just using to attach to a dyno.

The reason I'm asking is that some day I will be in need of a flywheel which is NOT made of cast iron. I'm hoping to find someone who makes either steel or aluminum flywheels.

Thanks for the tips on the clutches and pressure plates. I have seen the "Spec" units. They look like they would get the job done.

Any race shop should be able to make a flywheel to whatever specs you want. All it is is a chunk of metal machined down and holes drilled in it. Even a well equipped machine shop should have no problem making one. It probably wouldn't cost more than $300-400 to make a one off to your specs and get a starter ring pressed on.

I was trying to figure that out also.. maybe it is changing RPM but doing so very fast, but the rotational mass / flywheel would have to be almost nothing.
And is that sound the turbos ? or what ?

OK so I just watched it several more times.. and I think he IS poking the "throttle" quickly
and it is changing RPM but it is doing so VERY quickly.... that supercharger is wound tight..

Look at the clutch in the second picture. Its so tiny, they must be pushing past the 7000rpm+ range the drag engines have been doing. I'd love to see what transmission/transaxle they will use.
