Does anyone have any knowledge as to if the turbo om617 exhaust manifold would match the block of the om616, minus the last port?

Would porting and polishing the intake and exhaust ports on the manifolds WITHOUT porting and polishing the ports on the block be worth it?make any difference?

No. Material around the valves is the limit to airflow through the engine.

the only thing that would matter is to make sure all of the ports are matched to the gasket and head

any real power beyond that would require porting the head

also from my experience at the race shop polishing is not needed and actually will loose power! you need a mildly ruff surface for the air to go over think of it like how a golf ball works!

Well that makes sense about polishing.
So would porting the head be worth the effort?
As far as matching a om617 turbo exhaust manifold, to the om616 block..
I was looking at the 617manifold, and it looks as if the last unused port would have to be plugged somehow, and not cut off and welded shut like would have hoped to do.
The 4th and 5th ports are on one runner together.
am i right?..

Porting wouldn't be worth doing it just for that. I'd get a spare junkyard head, get it ported and eventually swap it when you need a headgasket or stronger head bolts.

Yeah, Polishing isn't good for gas motors with a wet intake manifold. The air needs to have turbulence to keep the fuel suspended (atomized). Now with diesels, I don't see it as being a problem. I would polish mine, except that I wouldn't bother spending the time. What I would do is just make sure everything has smooth transitions after or even before you port. Like smooth the ridges and do some port matching as Willbhere4u said with a dremel and that will be good. Even if the manifolds/head doesn't flow more air, if it is more efficient at flowing that air it does now, that will be improvement enough.

I've heard polishing the combustion chamber isn't to bad! I heard it doesn't create much power but that it reduces carbon build up? I guess it doesn't stick as well to a polished surface! I'd like to hear someone else chime in on that before I would attempt it!

whats the best way to plug the last port? on an om617 to 616 manifold swap?

I was thinking have it cut off and welded up? but being cast that might be tricky

or just fab up and mount an external waste gate to the last port?

There was a really great article about head porting for turbo diesels in a recent automotive trade mag(Engine Professional). I don't have a scanner but if anyone else does, I'd be happy to fax the article to them if they can scan and post it. Lots of good info. (As well, another great article in the same mag regarding coatings for TD's).

Cut off and welded up would be my choice i belive.
But after thinking about it, im highly considering getting headers made and getting rid of the manifold all together
