How hard is to replace upper oil gasket/seal?
My 79 300D turned out to be a bigger project, but I won't loose faith. I'm replacing alternator, alternator bracket, belts etc and tried to change oil for the first time since I bought the car (1 month). When I got underneath, I noticed everything from half the engine down is covered in black burned oil. So my first thought is to replace the gaskets. The small pan, with the actual oil plug, seems easy to do but if you go up the engine there's more leaks. What's involved in replacing the second, bigger gasket? Anyone tried it?
Also, with the car not being able to start for a week, I tried to do an oil change, while waiting for parts. I know it supposed to run a bit for the oil to drain better but I couldn't. It took all night for the drainage and oil is almost as thick as vasoline. Is that normal?
Ooops, wrong section. I meant maintenance, not tunning. Please move. Sorr.
Its not easy, the engine will need to be atleast partially removed from the bay. It is also unlikely to be the culprit. I recommend going to a car wash with a pressure washer and degrease and wash the engine well and then take another crack at the leaks. Leaks and squeeks are good for my OCD
