stiffening up manual transmission linkages?
stiffening up manual transmission linkages?
after spending a bunch of time with my 240d apart, i see why teh 4spd feels so squishy. both the transmission and shifter ends of the linkages have big squishy rubber bushings that i hypothesize are the source of the mushy shifter feel.
looking at the linkages, it seems like it would not be too hard to make either metal or urethane replacements for those bushings on a lathe. you'd probably need to make them 2-piece or get creative somehow to hold them in position, but i think it would be doable.
has anyone else thought about this?

heres a thread with some pics of removing those bushings and replacing them with brass-

I did a super hack temporary experiment on my 240 by replacing the rubber bushing under the stick handle with 12 dimes instead. made shifting a bit stiffer, but also clunkier. You should start with the bushings on the tranny and see what happens.
The dime method is awesome, saw it first-hand!
I'd wrap it in electrical tape till it fit perfect, then go from there.
Has anyone tried to cut off the Mercedes ends and just tread the rod and install small Heim Joints You can get those at any tractor supply and that would stay true for allot longer and would not bind.
