what to save
what to save
So, as I tear this baby apart what must I keep and what is junk anyway? I know I bought an interior doorhandle from someone here. It would be nice to have the whole car for parts but, that's no option.
So I for sure want the IP, turbo, what else?
Should I get out the trans, driveshaft, and diff?
Oh and my brand new shocks. This is going to be a lot of boxes
I need to make a list so I can get to work boxing, bagging and labeling stuff.
Cause another car might need it, I could sell it. The pump so I can modify it. Or whatever other reason. Like I will take my straight exhaust so I can just bolt it up to my next 300d. But, I also don't want to just hold onto stuff that will only be taking up space.
everything except the body lol
Totally, I have stopped for today cause it's pouring. Got my front shocks and all the calipers. Tomorrow will get the springs and maybe alternator, ps pump, belts. As I was looking at it I figured I could need almost any of those parts. Even some body like light assemblies, window motors, etc.
I guess I've never scraped a car so I wonder what to go for, aluminum wheels trans housing, aluminum/copper radiator. Wanting to maximize my payout, with a reasonable amount of work.
What was cause of death again?
I'd be interested in the exhaust valves if you rip it apart that far.
I can probably do that. Just will need some instruction. And a big ass torques bit to pull the head, right?
I drilled into the water jacket trying to fish out a stuck glowplug.
I would really be interested to open it up too, so I can learn more and see just what all that water injection might have done.
Well I feel bad this has to happen to your car. I had a head I could of give you, unfortunately I don't have it now.
off top of my head of parts you should salvage..
-Window motors/regulators (the Front driver's side is NLA new)
-Instrument cluster
-tach wiring, socket and sensor.
-speedo cable if good
-radiator
-interior parts that are good and not faded. i.e. visors, carpet etc.
-antenna motor
-steering box if tight
-HVAC blower motor
-climate control unit
-aux water pump
-monovalve
-starter
-alternator
-glow plug relay
-relays/fuses
-bowden cable
-switches
-axles if good and MB original (can always re-boot them)
-rotors if still serviceable
-lug nuts
-tail lights
-bumpers if not rusted
-fuel tank sending unit
How about connecting rods? That guy didn't want any pistons and they are laying in the driveway. About to make a trip to the scrapyard. Is there any legitimate use for used connecting rods? Or should they just be scrapped?
eBay the whole set! a new piston set is $900 I would think $100 plus shipping for the rods and pistons would appeal to some one!
Maybe, one has a chip in it. The guy who didn't buy them was asking about numbers on the pistons and I guess decided they are the wrong size.
I searched ebay for om617 pistons and there are no results. Should I really hold on to them?
I would, some 240D guy might want 4 to throw in their 616 or some such.
Too late. I guess I should have but, I just scrapped them this am. Not feeling too bad about it, all these parts are a mess around my porch, driveway, closet.
My new house has a huge shed/garage so maybe I can start buying up cars, flipping them and parting them out.
I love this greasy old stuff
