help broke something.!!
I tried a holeshot in the rain..... Now I can be rolling in or out of gear and the car will stop itself. Rolling and than clunk skid stop. Waiting for tow truck :-(
1985 300d 4 speed.
haha
Sounds like the trans or diff then don't it? Maybe some broken gears in the diff? Drain the fluid and see what's up there first I'd say.
And what is a holeshot? flooring it? neutral drop? brake torque?
My bad not universal language.
I tried reving it a bit more and letting the clutch out quickly. I didn't thinks I was toooooo hard on it.
Maybe the drive shaft was seeking freedom.
I crawled under and visually stuff was OK. Its gotta be the dif or trans I think. My car isn't even that souped up yet. I'd figure the clutch would slip first or something. Ug.
I bet on smashed diff too. But who knows. They are 'easy' to swap out.
Is it home up on blocks yet? drain that diff and take the cover off
oh yea, beer first
When I bought the car it had an extra dif in the trunk with an extra cluster. I assume the PO swapped difs when doing the manual trans swap. I threw the original cluster out today, I guess I dig out of the dumpster tonight. I have a 3. Something in the car now, the other dif is 2. Something.
I've got a Dieselmeken pump about to go in. Can any of the digs handle it?
How long have you been home ... LOL. Everything is fixable and most things are easily fixable with some patience ... LOL
Got it towed to a shop. (1st time minus alignment) I almost had it and should of had it towed home but my crappy landlord will fine me for working on my car. I get my work done in the public storage lot, here, there, and everywhere. Just wait until nightfall.
I'll let them open the dif and if its that swap myself.
prolly have in a 3.07 and the other is a 2.88. I much prefer the 2.88.
Swap that out if the axle gears are ok will take you like 5hr estimate.
There is a peachpart walkthrough on that, it's great.
But, we'll wait to see what initial investigations reveal.
And as you say match the cluster part # to the diff if possible, or fuck it, hahaha
Haven't had the odometer working since I got it anyways lol. I need to get the right cable someday. Fingers crossed on diff.

larsalan I guess I need to look at this stupid ass drip shit. What you have to like mess with those elements on the pump? What a fucking hassle. then use some wire to hold the throttle open or some shit?

she was good while she lasted.
Should help stretch out my 1st gear a tiny bit right? So little time in 1st.
yea, maybe there is other ways to tweak that. Fiddle with the bowden cable and that pressure modulator.
Maybe I'm wrong on that. I've messed with mine until I've got it the way I want it.
I've got the manual...I just mean to say I'm in first gear for only about 1/2 second before maxing my revs. <- slightly exaggerated.
I am such a newb sometimes though. When I think about some of the superturbo full custom builds. Those guys are like "I welded a whole car together today" . and I'm all like "where does the headlight fluid go?"
I just need a damn garage and my first home
upgrade will be to install a lift.
oh yea yea manual haha I forgot. Well, 1st is supposed to be a granny gear just to get you moving anyway. But that 2.44 is a hell of a lot better than 3.07 at highway speeds.
Can't speak to the gearing of your trans but with 4speed auto/3.07/stock tire the motor is spinning pretty high at like 65-70mph
Now with a 2.88 and a 8% larger back tire I feel much better cruising over 70mph. Now if only my alignment was tight enough to cruise at 80+ hahaha
I've got a feeling I need to stock up on these.

If you break another, bust out the welder and some 1/4" plate

The replacement has welded gears...any thoughts on that? Anybody got a spare?

Run it with welded gears then! It will only be a problem on slow tight turns. You should learn to get the hang of it.

I'm gonna keep that one in storage. I know the mechanic freaked out when he saw it. Old euro dude. I still have to look as he only told me over the phone. I think i'll be buying two more though. One to put in and keep the welded and another as a spare.
So this is the reason for the WTB. I just saw this.
For some reason, 2.88's appear to not hold up as well as the 3.07, 3.46, and 3.69 brethren. Perhaps the taller gear is a bit too much for the 185mm ring gear 1.1 liter case. Maybe a 210mm ring gear 1.3 liter case is what you need for your soon to be increased power.

Then you should be looking for a 210 mm 1.3 liter 3.06 found on w107 and w116 chassis. That should give you the strength you need.

Is that a direct bolt in swap?

i figure i shall update. so i had an extra diff but the gears were welded and i don't want to drive like that. A side note. the housing was different. Here is a pic.
The one I was driving is on the right. Is that standard for the w123?
The one on the left did not have bolts where the axle joins dif. I saw one in a 126 at the junkyard today that looked more like the one on the left. I ask these questions because this was obviously someones project car before I bought it and don't know what is stock and whats not. Lol learning a lot about these freaking diffs right now.
Also here is a pic of the welded gears that I will not be using. Never seen welded gears before. It looks like a horrible hack job to me.
the left one is the only ones I've ever seen.
there is a long thread on these
http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/thread-2570.html
And i see some pictures here of one with those bolts

Damn sh%t f*ck.
Lol so I probably had something not w123 stock. Hmm.
As of now I think its stock. My hunt involves checking for one with bolts. Maybe 2 different editions with same gear different housing. Who knows.
It was an 82 126 I looked at today that didn't have bolts. Forgot to check the ratio.

(07-09-2013, 08:28 AM)Simpler=Better I have a 2.47 diff from another series merc (gas v8?) in storage back home that I paid a fortune for. I'll try to remember to dig it up when I'm there this weekend. The mounting was very different, but you may be able to swap the gears into your housing? Don't know, I'll get some part numbers (assuming my Dad didn't sell it for scrap)

That turkey made my day!
I think my diff is not the same as the one you have picture, but honestly I haven't seen it in like 2 years when I packed all my w123 stuff up.

By the way I still need to buy one.
The different case style does not matter in the way it fits in the car, it is all the same. As stated earlier, the case with the bolts are an earlier style and the one piece style is from the later years.
Evidently, the diff that was a pulled out from your car was a replacement diff as the original is the same case style in the left.
.
Lol i want in.
