So the OM617 has beein installed in out Land Rover 110 for just over a year now and it runs very well.

The turbo is clocked and installed with the small Land Rover TDI intercooler.
Would like a little more power at lower RPMs, so was thinking of adding a VGT in place of the stock turbo.

Did a quick search and didn't see much on the OM617 VGT... could have missed it, but was looking for something cheap to start with that could be pulled off an engine at a junk yard or pick-n-pull and then work up to buying a new model after it is proven to be a positive upgrade.

Thoughts?

GT2256v sounds like what you're looking for. Small easy to find VNT turbo (from the Sprinter vans).

Whats your tranmission setup? With the an automatic mercedes transmission I would simply use the higher-stall torque converter which lets the stock turbo spool up easily. Got a boost gauge to see what your turbo is doing now?

No need for a new turbo, junkyard ones are A-OK so long as there's no shaft play

2056v is a little smaller, can be found on Jeep liberty CRDs. Also known as the "M53" turbo

Is your ALDA tuend?
Have you advanced your timing?

You can also tweak the guts of your pump (I believe)

X2 on the Garrett GT2256v off of sprinter vans.

I've seen them for sale for as low as $37.50 with zero shaft play (electronics overheat & its "cheaper to replace the entire unit".

The 2056 is a little scarce in the USofA as they only came on Jeep KJ Liberty (Cherokee) 2005-06.
I'm interested in upgrading my 2056 but I'm still saving for a superpump.

Thanks to all of you for the replies.
The transmission is currently a manual 5 speed LT77 which will be upgraded in the future to the R380 5 speed.

The pump including ALDA has not been tuned nor the timing set.
I understand that tuning will help, but was initially more concerned about the lack of boost at low RPMs thinking it was a no-brainer to locate a VNT that would provide some boost at lower RPM.

I'll check out the link raysorenson provided and probably have a few more questions.

Saw this on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MERCEDES-BENZ-SP...bf&vxp=mtr

This looks OK with a broken electronics box, but looks pricy compared to the cheap ones mentioned.

I do have a vacuum actuated unit for sale, but it is quite a bit more than $150.

Even with a 100:1 or better crawl ratio and 35" tires, I've seen people say an OM617 has room for improvement in the low rpm torque department. I'm thinking 5psi by 1200-1300 rpm would make a nice crawler engine.

Also check the surge line on the GT22, I imagine you'd be cutting it close below 1500rpm.

Can't you just get shorter gearing?

Currently running 3.54 gears with a 1.4 transfer case.
At first had a 1.6 transfer case, but the gearing was too low.

Will have to check out the pump adjustment, but think some low end boost would greatly help.

No have not made any adjustments, but by coincidence looked at this thread last night which also mentions the torque limiter:

http://turbobricks.com/forums/showthread...245&page=2

While I need schooling on the OM617 IP adjustments, do lots of mechanical work, so it must be time to dive in.
There were some threads here on IP adjustment I looked at a while back.

MY setup has a small intercooler so that should help cool the intake charge.

Quick spool valves only work on divided housing turbos. They shut exhaust off one scroll of the turbine and divert it to the larger side of the turbine wheel. As far as I know all the turbos discusses in this thread are open scroll
