Engine dies at ca 2200 rpm when driving
Engine dies at ca 2200 rpm when driving
Running problems. ML 270 CDI - 2004 mod engine 5 cyl 612.942. I am really splitting my hair. Engine starts easy.
Runs Perfect at idle.In Neutral I can rev engine to max rpm. No fault codes. Mb Star diagnose system. BUT when putting in Drive car runs as normal and when pressing the Accelerator pedal and engine revs over ca 2200 RPMs it is completely DEAD. Engine lamp EPC shows up, but no fault code. I stop the car, put in Neutral and starts easy again
and in Drive I can run again , but to avoid same thing to happen I have to drive VERY carefully and not reving over ca 2200 rpm.
Have changed low pressure pump and diesel filter. Checked amount coming out of pump. OK
Have changed to New high pressure pump.
Have changed to New MAF sensor.
What do I do NeXT ?? Any advice highly appreciated.
Hy,
watch the turbo buid up pressure by squese your hands on the rubber piping. those symptoms are consistent with lack of turbo pressure.
if u have no pressure above 2k , search for ruptured pipes or seals. if nothing found pay atention to turbo. if turbo is pneumatic actuation can be either the vac lines, electrovac actuator, or even the geometry actuator loose.
post your findings!

He says that above 2200RPM engine dies, stalls if you want. There is now way that anything associated with turbo nor intake pressure could do this. I bet my money that you have too high rail pressure so it shutts off. Thats pretty common, had this issue on 530d which died at 3500RPM. Have you changed DRV valve and rail pressure sensor?

If you say so.. you can drive CDI or any other CR diesel newer or older without intake manifold all day long and it won´t stall. But of course you would know that if you understood how EDC15-16 operates.
Hi, thanks for all Your advice. have changed pressure regulator on the rail, but no change. When car in neutral I can rev Close to 5000rpm and when driving in locked 1st gear revs to 4000 rpm but when in Drive and just little bit uphill the engine stops completely around 2000/2200 rpm. You can imagine when in trafic on the highway - very little vacuum and soon no Power steering and now brakes.
I restart the engine quickly and drive again like a very old lady.
I thought that without turbo pressure the ECU only reduced amount of fuel because MAF read less air, pressure regulator on rail adjusted fuel pressure and not that ECU actually stopped working and engine went dead. Other cars I have had with turbofailure I just plugged the oil line and drove away as a naturally aspirated engine. (of course turbo berings etc was sdamaged and turbine not rotating any more )
Are you sure that ECU stops the engine when lack of turbo pressure ?
No, you have fuel pressure problems.
Hi, I have just measured the fuel Return lines and from cyl 5 a LOT more are coming out. Will repair the injector early next week
and we will see.
As I said.. fuel pressure. Have checked all 5 in BOSCH test stand, as long as it leaks into fuel return its bad, but it won´t destroy your engine. Guess what happens when it dripps into cylinder.
That is probably the culprit.
I know of a guy with a vito van who experienced a similar problem, the engine would just die as soon as a decent load was put on it. Turns out that one of the pistons inside the high pressure pump was broken and when the ECU requested increased rail pressure at higher fuel rate it just couldn't keep up. Can't remember if it went into limp mode or shut down completely though.
BTW Limp mode on CDI engines is 3000 Rpm max and non turbo fueling levels AFAIK.
Hi,
Too much fuel Return from top of injector. Changed injector today and car runs fine.
When too much Return fuel , rail will lack fuel pressure when increasing load/ pedal to the metal.
Nice to have solved the problems. Have a good day all of you.
