Coilovers
Coilovers
(09-13-2009, 04:37 PM)garage Ive seen pics of a w123 wagon, and a w116 with coilover setups.
Is this a option on some models... that could be swapped over?
Or a fully custom job?

As far as the 116

Locked diff too!
hehe
Those aren't coilovers, those are shocks inside the springs. The stock configuration.

(09-14-2009, 12:21 PM)garage If thats stock configuration, why isnt my 116 like that?
I have shocks besides the coil.

Actually, if someone were willing to do the research, I'm pretty sure one could cobble together a coilover system for these cars using coilovers designed for other applications. It would be a matter of getting the right spring length figured out and mounting it. As far as shock settings and spring rates go you have your pick. I had a cheap set of Korean K-sport coilovers on my SE-R and it was a phenomenal difference in a car that had very good essentials from the factory already. Although the K-sports had pillow ball mounts, built in camber plates and came with Heim jointed endlinks for the rear sway bar, too.
I think that if someone were willing to do the homework, this is quite feasible for our cars and would certainly be a step up from cutting springs and whatnot.
(02-17-2010, 05:30 PM)tantank79 What are people's thoughts on using the existing shock mounts as coilover mounting points?

Look up some GM G bodies and the like with coilovers, while the systems are far from identical it's still upper and lower A's and the adaptation process would be similar.
That would be something to look into...adapting a QA1 coilover kit from another application.

Building an adaptor that fits into the spring cup, and accepts universal coilover sleeves, is pretty simple. 2 5/8" coilover springs are cheap and plentiful. www.stockcarproducts.com and Summit both have everything you'd need as far as the coilover parts.

(02-17-2010, 11:03 PM)Secondaries Generally not a good idea. Shock mounting points were meant to be used only for damping, not for load bearing.
The wagon that has coilovers is the team black smoke racing 300TD. It has RX-8 coilovers installed.
(02-25-2010, 11:32 PM)tantank79 What about on a wagon? The SLS shock mounting points were designed for load bearing.

Since this came back up, I would like to pose this question again.

The wagon chassis is very different from the sedan B-pillar back. The SLS supports the majority of the body load while the springs are basically there as a fail-safe.
SLS is available in the sedans. I don't know what, if any, reinforcement was done for them.
sls 4 way on a w201 was only available in the euro 2.5-16v, and evo models. But thats only a option, and a dime a dozen. So goodluck with finding that.

Yeah but the suspension is no longer original either, i belive most of it is from a Toyota Aristo.
