om606.962 factory block heater question
My OM606.962 has what appears to be a disabled factory block heater. No plug and the wire was folded up in the engine compartment and was not even accessible. My question is can I use it if I put a plug on the wire or is it even compatible with US 110/60 cycle electricity. There must be some reason it was never used. The donor car was a 1999 US W210 300TD.
When delivered, the US W210 E300 didn't have the cable installed. The new car buyer had to bring the car back to the dealer for a free upgrade to have the cable installed. It had to be done in the first few months. We had that done (back in 1998). They did a rather lousy job of it and the cable got abraded so it isn't safe at the moment. If it is a US model, then the block heater is 120vac compatible.
My German origin G300 came with a 230vac block heater which only delivers 1/4th the heating power on 120vac. It uses a different cable too. Unfortunately an exhaust shop melted that cable when doing some welding. It hardly matters much to me. The OM606 has started well the few times it has been left overnight in the cold (-15C up in Tahoe).
Great. I'll give it a try. I know they start without it but the resulting quick functioning heater makes it great for comfort. I always give my TDIs a 2 hour jolt in the mornings especially this morning (-2F).
