Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 08-23-2010

Picked it up last friday, like mentioned in the other thread, so here are some pictures:

I am very excited driving this car, even in stock condition, it doesnt really feel "underpowered", good response to throttle, quite quick shiftings of the AT and runs a straight 240km/H at WOT (Had to try it once*g*)
The only bad thing is, that the gear ratio is a little short, so if i want to increase topspeed, I´d have to rev it really high (What I actually dont like sustained...)

So in the next days I am going to sort out the little mechanical works, give her new breaks and a big service and then as first step make some decent software :-)

Regards, Alex

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - Jtn190D - 08-25-2010

What year?

It looks like it has a CDI engine?

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 08-25-2010

Its a 09/99 with 320CDI engine.

Flashed a new Software today with a mild powerupgrade to about 230hp/520Nm, couldnt wait any longer *g*

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - ForcedInduction - 08-25-2010

Its it the OM613 or OM648?
Its kind of annoying to know MB gave the world such a wonderful engine while the US was Diesel dry for 6 years.

I was under the impression that was due to California emissions?

230hp with a software upgrade. I just fainted.

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 08-26-2010

Its an OM613, the OM648 was invented in the W211 first.

230hp/520Nm sholud be kind of "mild" tuning, its just 15% more power and 10% more torque.

Guess you could make 250/570 with stock hardware, I will try in the next weeks tweaking the mappings a little more...

Nice car low milage, Smile
mine is a E320CDI Avantgarde
remaped for 250hp 600Nm stock settings ,EGR removed from maps Big Grin
which software are you using for the remap, and wich turbo for possibel upgrade

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 08-26-2010

I have a friend who is quote into mapping, but only for private use, not commercial.

Before raising power I would like to mount an EGT, EMP and boost pressure gauge just to keep an eye on those values...

Have folow a thread from
http://www.mbworld.org/forums/diesel-forum/236318-e320-cdi-mod-3.html
where a crasy Finnish guy rebuilding a 220cdi for near 300hp, interesting reading ? Tongue have you looked into AMG nozzels ?
or is it not nesseary for the 320cdi
I have mountet a hose for the boost presure but have not hat the time to maunt a gauge yet.
looking forward to see wath turbo you will mount to get 500hp Angel

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - jurmm - 10-24-2010

any progress with the car majesty78?
I'm keen to know as ive got the same car + remap + decat

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 10-24-2010

No engine related updates yet, sorry....

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 02-08-2011

Nothing overexiting, but i thought i might share it....

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - winmutt - 02-08-2011

Is that 6 sec 0-60?

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - willbhere4u - 02-08-2011

mph or kph?

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 02-08-2011

Unfortunately only kph, so its about 8 sec to 60 mph with some wheelspin followed from ESP restriction....

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - willbhere4u - 02-09-2011

that's still pretty darn quick!

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 02-09-2011

I rather watch the progress by measuring 0-200kpH, with first Software it was about 30sec, changed software again with result of 28sec. and with last software which is on the car now its 26sec.

But still 6sec. slower than my previous Seat Ibiza TDI *g*

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - jurmm - 02-24-2011

How much power and torque are you making majesty?

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 03-15-2011

Gave it a little SW tweak again:

0-100kp/H is now about 7.2sec

Then been in Germany to visit a friend and tried out v-max:

This is how it looks like now:

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 03-15-2011

(02-24-2011, 09:56 AM)jurmm How much power and torque are you making majesty?

About 240hp/600Nm

Regards, Alex

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 03-18-2011

The real downside of this car is the short gear ratio.

As you see on the picture above, its revving up to 4500rpm in 5th gear, making a little over 240km/h. (The speedo on these cars is quite accurate, GPS showed 243km/h).

But, even with 500hp it would not go faster because I dont want to rev it much higher tbh.

Rear diff ratio also cant be changed because then the whole TCU/ECU/CAN-Bus control gets f***ed up, causing limp mode :-(

Regards, Alex

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - winmutt - 03-21-2011

Heh. If I hit 240km/h in any of my cars I will be quite happy. Although my need for speed days are quite long gone. My top was 167mph on a VFR.

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 03-21-2011

I see a little light at the end of the tunnel, MB 400CDI uses 2.4 gear ratio (Stock 2.65) in rear differential.

Problem is to teach the tcu/ecu that there is a different gear ratio, with newer SG53 TCU its possible, but with my "old" SG52 TCU i am not sure.....:-((((

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - George3soccer - 03-22-2011

Winmutt- one of my first bikes were a vrf750. Great bikes.

Alex, very good looking e klase i must say.

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - jurmm - 03-29-2011

Very similar performance to my E320 cdiSmile. Did you rev it to 4600 rpm? Have you tried changing at 4000 rpm pulling the gear lever to the right? I find this better as above 4000 it runs out of oomph and it gets into the thick of the powerband when changing up.
Holding 1300rpm on the brakes will launch better (0-100 in less than 7) , but i suppose that may put more stress on your transmission.

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 03-29-2011

You've asked me to quick about how high it revvs before shifting, but I am quite sure it's about short before 4500rpm.

To avoid loosing the "oooomph" in upper rpm region we have raised the power at max. rpm.

Standard is 197hp@4200rpm, we hold 240hp up to 4400rpm.

Although I do have some issues with my ABS sensors on front axle since I own the car, therefor shifting is kind of muddy in higher speed regions especially over 100km/H (62mp/h) and cruise control only works up to 60km/H ( ~35mp/h)

This affects and spoils performance, so I have to find some time to sort it out in near future when i reman front brakes.

Regards, Alex

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 05-16-2011

Little Update performancewise:

Before:

About 240hp/600Nm

0-200 ~ 26sec

After: (With a little help from a friend *g*)

Changed MAP sensor from 250kpa to 300kpa and changed software again

About 260-270hp/650Nm

0-200 ~ 23sec

Sure, this is no strict scientific kind of testing, temperature, fuel level and quality (standard 51cetan or "premium" high cetan diesel) and especially wind does affect the results, but at least I always use the same runway and direction, so its a accurate enough measuring for me to compare and verify any gains ;-)
Next step performance related must be an uprated intercooler, especially now when it gets warmer outside you clearly feel power dropping after some WOT runs, so I have to find some solution there. Unfortunaltely, there is not much room behind the bumper and the cutout in the front bumper isnt really bigger than the stock intercooler....:-(

Updates, non performance related:

Been at a friends MB workshop on saturday, and after some inspection, we came to the result, that the car will need a full respray, to many small ditches, scratches and dents and especially small rust nests would make a part-respray even more work than a complete one. So its going to be taken apart and respayed completly in autumn before winter comes...

So long,

Alex

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 08-27-2011

Been on a track day today with my girlfriend and both cars, mine and her Seat Ibiza Cupra 1.8T.

Been really funny, car worked fine, transmission worked well but after ~20 laps the brake pedal became softer and softer.

The course is quite short and very curvy, so not really a highspeed track, and it has been humidified to reduce noise.

Here two videos:

Mercedes:

Ibiza:

Laptimes of both cars is quite equal, which I think is good if you compare a big, heavy Mercedes which is not really a "handy" track car, to a lightweight, compact Ibiza....

Regards, Alex

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 08-29-2011

Another update:

New software from mr.x *g*

Remember car is still stock hardware except decat.

0-100 kph (62mph) ~ 6.3sec.
0-200 kph (124mph) ~ 20.5sec.
60-140 kph (37-87mph) ~ 7sec.

Not to bad for an "old" oilburner i think :-)

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - winmutt - 08-29-2011

No not too shabby at all...

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 08-30-2011

1/4Mile results from sunday are online

Best run 14.422@162kph (100mph)

I like :-)

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - winmutt - 08-30-2011

LOL that is a very large turbine you have in your avatar?, what is that from.

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 08-30-2011

Thats a compressor wheel from a ASEA BROWN BOVERI gas turbine ;-) IIRC

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - willbhere4u - 10-17-2011

Very cool do you have all of these machines at you disposal? that's some serious stuff there

please keep us updated thanks for the pics

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 10-17-2011

Thanks for your comment :-)

Yes, I do have access to all kinds of machines, balancing rig, grinding machines, cnc mills and lathes....

Only bodywork is done by a friend of mine, I am more the mechanics guy, overhauling turbos and making custom turbos is part of my hobby ;-)

Regards, Alex

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - willbhere4u - 10-17-2011

very cool! I would love to be able to balance my own part's

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 11-19-2011

Update on body work and mechanic fixes:

Power window left rear was a little broken:

Searched the leak in A/C, and found a broken A/C line, PITA to swap the line....

Fog light on left side did not work, put new electric lines, works now.

At the bodyworks:

Preowner seemed not to be very professional, paintjob on roof without removing the aerial:

So had to grind the whole roof also:

Trunk lid was to damaged from corrosion, so had to get a new one...

Rear bumper had some missing paint and dents, so fixed that one also:

Primered front hood:

Off it goes to the MB worhshop for paintjob....

Preparing for paintjob:

DO IT!:

Hopefully it will be reassembled and all done until next saturday, I have been without my car now since 12th of semptember....

Regards, Alex

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 01-07-2012

Paintjob is finished and several mecahnical/electrical failures are cured.

Additional the wheel arches got rollered to make a little more space for the wheels and the "elegance" frontgrill was swapped to a "Avantgarde" grill.
SatNav ist wotking perfect now.

In the meantime I also received the high flow compressor wheels and started workiing on the oem GT2359V turbo to fit the wheel on it.

Here some comparison pictures GT2359V wheel vs. 62/65 extended tip wheel:

Here you see the difference between standard and extended tip wheel on exducer diameter of the wheel:

As the standard wheel is just a "superback" wheel and the upgrgade wheel is a "deep superback, I had to machine the backside of the new wheel to meet up with the backplate. Removed 1.5mm from backside on turning lathe:

Here you see the gap between backplate and wheel:

Ready:

Center housing and rotating assembly (CHRA) completed:

The backplate behind the wheel has also been machined to accept the bigger wheel.

Cleaned up VNT mechanics and reassembled it:

Short video of VNT function:

Then made a DRY shaft play test to evaluate the minimum gap between compressor wheel and compressor housing. Shaft play is about 0.3mm so I will make gap to 0.5mm, stock is between 0.65-0.8mm

Next week I have to finish the compressor housing machining and then the turbo will be ready to go ;-)

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 01-09-2012

I had them custom made.

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - JustPassinThru - 01-09-2012

(01-09-2012, 04:56 AM)majesty78 I had them custom made.

If you make another one, just tell me how much and where do I send the money! I can get it balanced locally.

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - majesty78 - 01-09-2012

My dumb@$$ question of the day:
Would ir be beneficial/feasible to tap the head of the compressor bolt & thread/locktite a cone to direct the airflow?

Ed

RE: Majesty78´s Majestic ;-) - Captain America - 01-12-2012

Cool idea, like the jet engines on airplanes, dunno if there would be any benefit here though
