recommend water separation filter? - mr_manny - 11-13-2010

anyone running a water separation filter?

I'm planning on taking trips to mexico, and have some concerns regarding the quality of diesel south of the border.
I have found a few kits, even some that have reusable filters Smile

Anything in the 80gph range sould be good...right?

any input/recommendations are appreciated.

The stock filter separates water, it just doesn't have a drain like modern ones.

any thoughts on a fram/Baldwin/caterpillar setup?

found a few references around these and really like the international availability, along with replacement costs Smile

I'll grab part numbers off the little Racor one I have if I remember. It's about the size of the stock filter, but it's a bit odd. You spin the filter on the flange, then spin the water bowl onto the filter. Holds a vac quite well, ended up leaving the shutoff closed one time...

This has been a concern of mine.My car uses a poly tank from the factory.I'm told that they do not sweat as bad as steel tanks, but I live in a very humid area.Should I consider ditching the stock Mercedes unit and go with one like you posted? My maintenance plans include changing the filters with the oil every 10,000 to 15,000 miles.Would that keep water out of the fuel system? What would you recommend? This car will not be a daily driver, but will be driven a few times a month.

For your application, I would run a 2 micron Baldwin BF7591-D with a drain on the stock head.

Or you can run a 2 micron CAT 1R-0750 without drain on the stock head too with an 1"-14 adapter. It's a bit taller then the Baldwin, but will certainly keep some water at the bottom of the filter until you change it out in your replacement interval.

Thanks.I'll keep that in mind when I set everything up.

Not really. Keep the tank vent clean and the cap seal tight.
Moisture in the air is minimal concern unless you're frequently driving through streams where the tank vent would be submerged. Water contamination usually comes from underground storage tanks that are corroded or have a poorly sealing lid at ground level.

The baldwin mod is a good option, better filtration is never a bad idea.

Thanks.I'll be doing that one.
