Hard starting 603 - George3soccer - 09-21-2012

Hey guys been having trouble starting in the mornings.

Motor cranks right over and starts right away after two glow plug turn overs. Glow plug light come right on.

Not sure what model glow plugs are in there right now.

Once started the motor seems like it doesn't fire on all cylinders and sometimes will stall after its started until I give it a little throttle to get it running at a higher rpm.

I have a video I it hiccuping with a hard start and smoking.

The smoke is a little blueish grayish. Not much black at all

You should not need two glow plug turn overs.

Anyways, I would check compression and look suspiciously at the delivery valve o-rings. Then I would change the glowplugs. You can also test the plugs with a multimeter at the harness, it would detect obvious failures.

Well I have been doing two. Most likely if I did one I bet it would fire right up. I don't want it not start or just crank so I have been doing two.

Compression test I will get back to you on that. Need to get a diesel tester, do not have one at the moment.

O-rings should I be looking for sweating right by the collar. Anything different.

Glow plugs I had a feeling I was going to have to upgrade. Is there any type I should be sticking with. I hear Bosch are still king. Monarks are crap still.

I had almost the exact same thing happen with my 617 and once I swapped out my glow plugs it would fire right away.

Had read that alot of the WVO folks had installed a switch in place of the glow plug relay, to help compensate for the time needed to warm up the oils, so I tried that and it works wonders on the times that it sputters and stalls.

But that could an indicator of something else - just giving you my two bits.

Try waiting 10 seconds after the glow plug light turns off before starting. The glow plugs stay on longer than the light on my car 87 300sdl and that helps it a bunch.
