alternative to the factory om606.962 oil cooler - 50harleyrider - 11-07-2016

I'm considering an aftermarket oil cooler or completely eliminating mine and wondered if anyone had considered it. The factory W210 cooler has hard steel tubing on it which connect to the two rubber flex lines which in turn connect to the engine. The lines have fittings I'm not too familiar with so I'd like to adapt them to AN-10 fittings which I'm familiar with and which most aftermarket oil coolers use. Just wanted to know if anyone has explored this in the past?

I have this one at work for the testbench. It works pretty okay...

Used in Volvo's ... if you google for " Volvo oil cooler" , you will find this Smile

(beware, you need one with 4 hosebarbs.. you have them also with 2, they are meant to be screwed against the engine or gearbox or something)

Still would need the right way to connect it. Are the flared fittings overkill
(just cut the hose )on the oe and would barbed fittings and and an additional length oil resistant hose suffice? your 4 barb one is 2 separate coolers or an oil to water exchanger?

That 4-barbs is Water-to-oil heat exchanger! While the one you show, with 2 barbs, is also one .. but the oil enters via holes in the underside.

i'll be using the om605 water/oil heat exchanger on my w460 om606 conversion.
hoping it will suffice

If you cut open the hose crimps going onto the funny fittings on the 606 oil filter housing, they are just 19mm/ 3/4" barbs underneath.

Meaning barbs and and 3/4" ID oil resistant hose and hose clamps will suffice for an om606 aftermarket cooler such as the above Volvo cooler? Seems odd such elaborate oe fittings.

Well, as long as there is no pressure, just a usual hose-to-pipe-with-hose-clamp connection will suffice Smile

Don't do with hose clamps, that is just wrong.. That is in the pressure side.

Just weld some an10 connectors and fit universal oil cooler and make lines between from ptfe example, easy?

Don't cut corners on a oil cooler. Go with A/N fittings, they are -12 to be the same size as stock.

Looks nice. Where do you find those coated straps? I need to put them on the cooler hoses as well as the heater hoses.

Hey Zeeman, I see your cooler hoses curl back under the MM's. Got any photos and descriptions of the setup you used and where you located it? My F150 is getting really busy up front with radiator, ps cooler, tranny cooler, AC condensing unit and intercooler + boost piping so I need to look at some alternate locations for the engine oil cooler. What's your feel for the water to oil coolers like post #2 in this thread? I could then tee into the heater hose and wouldn't have to worry about a thermostat or location of the cooler in the outside air stream.

I don't like the style in #2, I don't feel they cool enough and they are hard to convert off the block. Enclosed are some pictures of the one I installed on the 07 Jeep JK I did. There was no room in the front so I put it to the back of the wheel well so it could get air via the electric fans. They are controlled by a temp sender in the cooler.

More like meaning you can take them funny Mercedes fittings to a hydraulics place and they will crimp them onto some new hydraulic hose of your choosing.

It will be surprisingly cheap man
