misting the outside of the intercooler? - cell - 01-22-2010 has anyone looked into misting the outside of an intercooler with water, to increase its efficiency for short bursts? perhaps using the kind of nozzles you see used at the grocery store to water the veggies? RE: misting the outside of the intercooler? - cell - 01-22-2010 turns out this is actually a very popular DIY mod. cheap parts: $9 universal washer pump: http://www.ryderfleetproducts.com/cgi-bin/ryderfp/products/srm/oid/45703/pn/Windshield-Washer-Pump-Universal/erm/product_detail.jsp $0.74 nozzles: http://www.dripirrigation.com/index.php?cPath=43_79 not sure what PSI windshield washer pumps typically run at. I've found postings online claiming anywhere from 5 to 40 psi. RE: misting the outside of the intercooler? - ForcedInduction - 01-22-2010 No reason it wouldn't work, just not much benefit compared to using the money for a large intercooler from the start. The water has to be a very fine mist. If it doesn't evaporate its not reducing the temperature. Anything less than 100psi just won't work. RE: misting the outside of the intercooler? - cell - 01-22-2010 I remember reading that one of the primary advantages to the insanely high pressures used in direct injection systems is that droplet size is inversely proportional to pressure. makes sense that it applies here as well. RE: misting the outside of the intercooler? - willbhere4u - 01-22-2010 Some of the old 80s bmw washer pumps make good pressure I had a 1980 530i and when the nozzle got plugged it made one of the clear reinforced lines bulge up and explode sounded like a gun wet off when it let go!!! must have had good pressure!!! here's a pic of the hose type not the cheap kind!!! RE: misting the outside of the intercooler? - mbenzo300td - 01-22-2010 The subaru wrx has the tank in the trunk and i believe it doubles as the windshield spray. Id love to do this in my w124 along with a battery relocate. Try and even out the wieght distribution. |
