New guy here - EuroBenz - 11-27-2010 Hi everyone, checking in your forums with my 79 300TD non turbo 617 engine. Previous owners butchered this car, including missing interior, wires instead of door handles, cut hoses capped eith screws, 5" nail locking gas door etc. Please tell me what's missing from this bay and what is that hose at #1? I don't know this engine. RE: New guy here - willbhere4u - 11-27-2010 the #1 hose is filtered air from the air filter it goes to the vacuum pump to run almost all accessories like locks, heater and the on off switch to The #2 is the air inlet in to the air filter there should be a cheap plastic hose connecting it to a small scoop on the rad support above the headlight to get cold air RE: New guy here - Alastair E - 11-27-2010 Hmm.... It doesnt look That incomplete! Nos 1 pipe is the air outlet from the vac. pump. Not all were vented into the crank-case, but passed through a pipe to the air-filter. This is quite normal and nothing to worry about. Nos 2 as had been said, should have a short plastic concertina-tube --like on a vac. cleaner, attached to a plastic moulded scoop that sits on the front panel above the headlight. Nos 3 looks like someone's replaced the windscreen washer-bottle with a plastic oil-bottle...Difficult to see in the pic.... Dunno,--But it looks like the accel-cable and part of the accel. linkage is missing, maybe wrong, not used to looking at a LHD car.... RE: New guy here - JB3 - 11-27-2010 (11-27-2010, 12:59 PM)Alastair E Dunno,--But it looks like the accel-cable and part of the accel. linkage is missing, maybe wrong, not used to looking at a LHD car.... its probably correct, I had that same setup on an old 79 NA I owned. The linkage for some reason goes clear over to the passenger side low on the firewall, then pivots low near the manifolds with a spring loaded bracket, then up and over like in the pic. Its a weird routing with what seems like a LOT of unnecessary connections. Maybe its a throwback to when there was a kind of throttle plate setup on the older motors and the linkage moved it? On mine, the linkage did nothing other than move the injection pump lever. Maybe it can be dispensed with and simplified with a 300D turbo linkage? RE: New guy here - EuroBenz - 11-28-2010 Thank you all for the replies. You guys really know this stuff. Here are some shots of the halves of the engine to see better. On this shot, what's missing or are the holes normal? On this one, is oil normal to be found on top of that filter cover? Is it comming from that vacuum hose? The hose looks kinda of dirty for just carring air. Also, the connection where hose enters air filter cover is non-existent, that rubber gasket/connector it's so worn out that it does not stay in. Also, on the last pic, somebody used this threaded rod for something, I think the belt. Is that "ear" piece underneath the nut supposed to be bent like that? RE: New guy here - Alastair E - 11-28-2010 1 and 2 are quite normal. The large hole is the centre of the spring-perch to allow a spring-compressor to safely compress road-spring. The small holes dotted around the inner wheel-house are provisions for mounting various items on different models like the gasser etc. They all used the same inner wings...Quite normal. Your alternator adjustment bracket has been bent out of shape, prob by adjustment without slackening the alt mount through-bolts first... Looks like you have a few spare wires, possibly for the windscreen washer thats been replaced by the oil-bottle.... RE: New guy here - willbhere4u - 11-28-2010 or it could be the electric cooling fan for the ac in front of the rad! RE: New guy here - EuroBenz - 12-15-2010 here comes more questions: I just took out the glow plugs and cleaned everything up and I noticed, besides the 5 glowplugs, there's 2 more things towards the middle of engine, in between the glowplugs, that they're installed the same way as the plugs, but they each have a black cap/connector connected to a wire. The wires going in those caps are in really bad shape and I feel I need to replace them. What are those things called and what's their role? Is there a good website for such parts? Your input is highly appreciate it. Also, my engine code reads 617.011.09.01. Any ideeas what year that is? I know it's using a 3"x11.5" air filter. RE: New guy here - willbhere4u - 12-15-2010 They measure the temp of the engine to tell the timer how long to run the glow plugs! RE: New guy here - EuroBenz - 12-16-2010 Thank you for replies, any good websites for parts? Or iit is not allowed to disclose here? How about a way to figure out the engine year? RE: New guy here - larsalan - 12-16-2010 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_OM617_engine should be printed on the frame under the hood. where do people buy parts? partsgeek peachparts autohauz RE: New guy here - W116Lorinser - 12-22-2010 rockauto.com autohausaz.com two great sites with good prices |
