no power for a week! - JB3 - 08-30-2011

damn this hurricane for creating whats looking to be a full week of no power at my shop for me during perfect weather! Big Grin Ironically I have power at home, but the next place over doesnt

In all seriousness though, this sucks big time with this being the end of the month anyway, what are other peoples power situations?

(08-30-2011, 04:10 PM)Captain America I was out for 24 hrs over the weekend here in southern Cali

why? was it weather related?

Couple years ago I lost power for two days as the bonehead national grid guy cut my power, instead of my deadbeat neighbors! Took years to clean up that mistake, still occasionally get calls from collection agencies about it.

RE: no power for a week! - Captain America - 08-30-2011

I dunno if it was heat related but it was 108 outside!

RE: no power for a week! - JB3 - 08-31-2011

look at this mess!

They are telling me september 5th!

I think I will be building that generator I spoke about for years, I have a 1.6 VW diesel sitting out, would be a perfect powerplant probably

Wow. that's sucks. I've always talked about making a generator also.
Makes me think I better do something sooner for this type of occasion.

It would be interesting to see what you'd do with the 1.6.

I saw a OM615 (I think thats the #) on CL out here that has a governor and everything ready to be setup as a generator. I don't see why you couldn't use that 1.6 VW for a gen though. Rig something up for a throttle that could increase a little bit when there is load applied.

A guy I know has a diesel generator he powers his shop with. He runs power tools and a fairly large scale biodiesel processor from the generator and it works well. Definitely something I would look in to doing.

I found this link over on PP, I intend to eventually build exactly this. awesome read, I have also a VW manual tranny, so I might be able to do what he says about using the clutch disc as effectively a shock absorbing device for start up and shut down. that idea makes a lot of interesting sense to me.
