300CD IP Tuning... Lack of Fuel? - bmwpowere36m3 - 10-17-2011 I filmed my 300CD after doing some IP tweaks. I still can't get much smoke if any... I'm wondering if I'm getting enough fuel?
Engine has been serviced: adjusted valves, corrected camshaft timing (was ~8 deg off), adjusted IP timing (24 deg), replaced both filters, cleaned tank screen and replaced air filter. I run on a mix of diesel and 5% B100. Click Here For 300CD Vid RE: 300CD IP Tuning... Lack of Fuel? - willbhere4u - 10-17-2011 Did you try stretching the spring in the lift pump? to make sure your getting full pressure to the injection pump? There are some treads on this subject RE: 300CD IP Tuning... Lack of Fuel? - ronnie - 10-17-2011 he has stretched the spring but not checked to see what the pressure actually is yet. If the fuel pressure does turn out to be ok then it could well be the torque capsile needs to be turned up a bit. Just noticed 2.47 diff? must be a slug off the line, great for cruising though. RE: 300CD IP Tuning... Lack of Fuel? - MFSuper90 - 10-17-2011 I never noticed any smoke until i turned in the horizontal throttle stop a couple turns and adjusted my rack limiter, even then it was only a haze when i floored it in nuetral. The most noticable chang is the torque capsule for sure. It really let the coal roll RE: 300CD IP Tuning... Well, finally got a chance to check my fuel supply pressure (after main filter, before IP): Unclamped Return Idle: ~13-16psi (unsteady reading) 3k RPM: ~20psi (steady reading) Clamped Return Idle: ~20psi (steady reading) 3k RPM: ~20psi (steady reading) So it appears reasonable... RE: 300CD IP Tuning... Lack of Fuel? - ronnie - 11-23-2011 It is reasonable. I am surprised you do not get more with it clamped off though. Should max out about 30 psi. You should have enough to do some ip adjustments. if you really get into it you may want more fuel pressure.I am running 28 psi at cruising speed, about 20 at idle. Don't forget to get an egt gauge before doing ip work. The rack limiter can be adjusted some as a first step. the rest you should read up on really good before jumping in. There is a good post in this forum "thoery of m/mw pumps" that gives a real good primer on ip adjustments. Guess it has been a while, should have read your first post again. Your next step is going to be torque control. Be real careful and follow the guide on this one. This will give lots of smoke if to heavy handed. Would suggest 1/2 turn increments to start with. I have mine at 2 turns in, and this is a bit aggressive. I have to watch my egts, and look in the mirror to see if I am smoking someone out. |
