Help me go down! - disarrae - 12-28-2011 Ok, so after stripping nearly 1k of weight of the car, the thing looks like a frigging Donk. The goal being to improve handling, not tip over, we decided to chop some springs today. It's an 82 300 SD, btw. Start with driver's side front, get crappy clamp tool from Horrible Freight in there, angle grind spring *SNAP*. Pieces fly, tool bends, an hour later we've cut 3 coils off 1 spring. So how in the hell do I cut the other three? Do I really need to take them out? I really don't want to fight 30+ year old bolts off the car, and then risk tearing the delicate balance of rust, mildew, and cracked rubber that holds everything together under there. Thanks! RE: Help me go down! - larsalan - 12-29-2011 The rear springs are less trouble to get out than the front imo. And if your lowering the subframe on the rear to get the springs out you might as well get the diff of your choice in there. Don't you need pretty short gears for racing? Lower the rear subframe with 2x 24mm bolts on either side of the car. Remove shocks and springs come out. Replace shocks with super stiff ones, bilstien hd. The front you need to take apart lots of stuff to get them out. Better do the other side now that you've chopped the one, yeah. RE: Help me go down! - willbhere4u - 12-29-2011 I would use a cut of wheel to cut the spring it goes a lot faster than sawsall or torch RE: Help me go down! - disarrae - 12-29-2011 Yeah, we used a cut wheel and it did go pretty well until the spring clamps shifted and bound the now 2 piece spring which we had to cut into smaller pieces to get them all out. We are contemplating a new (to us) diff so pulling the rear end off is a possibility. Everything on the car takes 3 times longer than we think it will, so replacing the diff should take a week RE: Help me go down! - willbhere4u - 12-29-2011 I think this thread needs some pictures lol I need to chop some coils on my 300SDL as well the front sits up to far now with the 17" on there RE: Help me go down! - iheartboost - 12-29-2011 x2 on the pics RE: Help me go down! - larsalan - 12-29-2011 here is the info on rear end gears. http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/showthread.php?tid=2570 number is on the lower driverside. Need to clean off all the grease to see it. What is the top speeds on the tracks you race? Maybe you need a welded diff RE: Help me go down! - disarrae - 12-30-2011 Here's the Benz with the front springs cut. When we dropped it off the jack stands I nearly panicked, did I get the numbers wrong!?!? But it really looks wicked. We're taking it to a friend's shop with a lift to take the back end off, and change the diff fluid at the same time. I'll get better pics uploaded when my computer starts working again. Top speed is generally 100ish, in the Benz we're probably looking at 85, unless there is a looooooooooong straight. Thanks for the diff info, we're looking into it! trying to attach pics, not having a lot of success so far! Anyway, search for Dirty Little Freaks Racing on facebook and you can see our progress there. I'll keep working on the uploads. RE: Help me go down! - disarrae - 12-30-2011 Before and after pictures of the front wheel. We cut 3 springs on a highly lightened car (as in even the sound deadening is gone). RE: Help me go down! - larsalan - 12-31-2011 Not that light. I still see like 50lbs of exhaust on there Also those seats are wicked heavy, do you have some replacements? RE: Help me go down! - Greazzer - 12-31-2011 I am in the process of trying to shed weight. First goal is a CF hood. That should get rid of about 43 pounds. Then, trunk lid which seems simpler but not the bling factor. Those two alone should get rid of about 65 pounds. RE: Help me go down! - disarrae - 12-31-2011 CF is cool, but it's a out of our scope and budget of $500. We'll be replacing the driver's seat with a Corbeau Forza, I'm still working on making the seat mounts play nicely together. The rest of the seats are out and staying out. They are heavy. RE: Help me go down! - aaa - 12-31-2011 The hood and trunk might be aluminum already, if they aren't you might be able to find a set from another SD since some of them had it. RE: Help me go down! - Greazzer - 12-31-2011 Tried that from a SD and they are different. I thought they were the same. I could have cried when I tried to fit them up. I still have one aluminum trunk lid left over. I actually got 2 sets (hood & trunk lid), but sold 3 out of 4 pieces. Made an OK profit, but I would love to have an aluminum hood and trunk lid. The aluminium was lighter, but only by 13 or so pounds. So, CF is in a whole different ballgame at being over 40 pounds lighter. Right now a W123 sedan hood weighs about 48 pounds. A CF hood will be well under 10 pounds. That's 80% reduction. Same deal with trunk lid. Doors are way too sexy of an idea right now. I am still a little scared to try making the mold, but Monday is the day of reckoning for making the mold. RE: Help me go down! - garage - 12-31-2011 There IS aluminum hoods and trunk lids for the w126. I have a aluminum trunk lid for the w126 in my room right now. Are you gonna get rid of those KYB shocks? I would slap some bilstein HDs on there for sure. The sound deadening is fun to take out huh? sticky mess is what it was for me. Like larsalan pointed out, i still see the exhaust on there, rip that sucker off! Can we get some pics of the stripped interior? Pretty please? RE: Help me go down! - Greazzer - 12-31-2011 I was talking about the W123 .... RE: Help me go down! - garage - 12-31-2011 And they're talking about a w126? ... RE: Help me go down! - larsalan - 12-31-2011 (12-31-2011, 04:12 PM)garage And there talking about a w126? ... Ya, this whole time. There is even a picture of it *they're RE: Help me go down! - garage - 12-31-2011 Question mark was sarcasim. Thanks for correcting my grammer Mr.larsalan Maybe "They are" would have been more proper? "would have been more proper" is that proper? or maybe the question mark was condescending? idk wich is proper? RE: Help me go down! - larsalan - 12-31-2011 Oh, let's not fight. I kid, cause I love. RE: Help me go down! - garage - 12-31-2011 No fighting. Sarcasim once again. I suppose sarcasim is better left to actual spoken words. anyways /end hijack RE: Help me go down! - larsalan - 12-31-2011 I was mainly jabbing at greazzer for mixing up the body styles I knew you were doing the same. This thread is for sure hi-jacked. Is there a project thread for this car yet? disarrae? Oh and more pics. RE: Help me go down! - JustPassinThru - 12-31-2011 Theirs an aluminum hood and trunk lid on a W126 300SD in a yard about an ours drive from me, out on the Kitsap Peninsula. Oar at leased, there *was* won they're, three weeks ago. Color is Nautical (= Marine) Blew, same as my 300D. They wanted $100 four both. Cause im laughing hard now We are all talking about aluminum hoods and lids, i wouldnt doubt her car already has the aluminum parts!! RE: Help me go down! - JustPassinThru - 01-01-2012 (12-31-2011, 11:34 PM)garage ...Is your post a pun on me spelling "they're", "there"? Yeah, I guess I shouldn't be so sarcasistic. RE: Help me go down! - disarrae - 01-01-2012 Ok boys, settle down! Yes we have aluminum hood and trunk, so CF would be a negligible weight loss but cool, but too much bling. The judges will see that and look for other cheaty parts, like the oil catch can I'm making out of the AC drier. We're taking it in to get the back half done tomorrow, so I'll have more pics then. Also, we're looking for added weight loss. Doors are zipped, glass out, sound crap out, we need to keep the DBs at 92, so I don't want to tear off too much exhaust. Any corners that can be stripped that I've missed? Oh and Garage, Bush Taxi would have been an awesome theme for a chick team! We'll stick with Smokey the Benz for now, but maybe next season! Here's a better pic we snapped today during our "sunny" weather! Oh an I forgot, we lost a few ounces by (unintentionally) removing the steering wheel bolt. Don't know where the damn thing got to! RE: Help me go down! - Torkey - 01-01-2012 In the spirit of full disclosure, I'm Rae's partner in crime on this build and...... I love the look. Some bigger tires in the back and some wheelie bars and we've got a quarter mile stock car. But do they have a class for diesel? RE: Help me go down! - larsalan - 01-01-2012 Must be a diesel class. Taking the muffler off might not be too loud. I dunno what 92db sounds like but, the turbo slows the exhaust gasses. And then maybe have the exhaust turn down at the pavement to help kill some more sound. Though turning the fueling up seems to add volume Are you going to turn up that pump? Have and intercooler? Plenty of us drive around with straight pipes all on public roads all the time. It's a little loud but not even like a semi that's at idle. RE: Help me go down! - garage - 01-01-2012 Straight pipe on these things isnt bad at all! I think youd be surprised how quiet it is. As for weight shedding, how about taking off all the braceing and hinges off the trunk lid and hood, shaving it all so its just a flimsy piece of aluminum, and then using hood pins to secure it? How about the sunroof? Rip that sucker off and all the parts that make it move, then rivit a piece of aluminum in its place? And if were talking about ounces here, take off ALL the ugly chrome trim and badgeing? Yeah haha, bush taxi would be a sweet name for a girls team, bahaha Disarae make a "project" thread for this thing! RE: Help me go down! - willbhere4u - 01-01-2012 As far as weight savings goes if you don't need headlights and tail lights you can remove the whole electrical system wiring harness and alternator gauges and all just keep some jumper wires and a batter in the pits to start the engine with? RE: Help me go down! - disarrae - 01-01-2012 Sunroof, check Electrical, check Trunk Latches, we'll work on that Door latches, check Starting a build thread, check! |
