124 rear subframe upgrade - oel_brenner - 04-19-2009 swapped in the entire rear subframe from a 1994 E420 this includes the larger 210mm diff housing and the much beefier steel frame/mount not to mention the brake upgrade so the subframe basically just bolts in, but this is the strange part.. the center support bearing in the M119 V8 cars is not located in the same position in the tunnel as the non V8 cars.. not sure why they did this but I had to have a custom driveshaft rear section made longer the the E420 unit so the stock 185mm diff had a 2.65 final drive ratio the new E420 unit has a 2.24 gearset, and running the 18 inch wheels my effective final drive ratio is an amazingly tall 2.17 now that the swap is complete, stop and go city driving is a bit sluggish, but as I drive this car mostly on the highway, its a great tradeoff.. highway RPMs are way down and I am pretty sure I will pick up some better fuel economy. I think this will be even better with the planned 5-speed swap as my tachometer is currently not working and the speedo is horrifyingly inaccurate , I cannot report RPM to speed numbers right now... stay tuned. RE: 124 rear subframe upgrade - oel_brenner - 04-21-2009 (04-21-2009, 12:37 AM)kamel Hey, can you take me for a ride in your fail boat? anytime you ( or any forum members ) are in the Tampa FL area boat rides in the twin 617 vessel are available its still weird when I run the boat to hear the familiar klatta klatta of the 617... thats a car noise! not a boat noise ! pretty cool though.. on the speedo... the E420 trans uses an electronic speedo, so with my final drive ratio way up, the cable speedo is horribly off.. I think I am going to put the gauge face from the E420 into my car the 420 gauge face goes to 160 MPH and mine only goes to 140 MPH.. right now the speedo is around 15 MPH too slow switching the face to the 160 MPH unit it would only be around 5 MPH too fast I love this final drive ratio on the highway... its sooooo smooth and quiet still not enough data to decide if its a net gain or loss in overall fuel economy ( its sucks around town ) RE: 124 rear subframe upgrade - CID Vicious - 09-25-2009 Damn, you had me going for a minute...I thought this was swapping the 124 rear into the 123.
